Choir "oo's" "uu's" and "mm's" don't work

In Logic Pro X, with the smart controls on choir samples, there are buttons to switch between different sounds like "aa" "oo" "uu" and "mm", but no matter which one is selected, it always comes out as an "aa".

Anyone else noticed this? Anyway to actually get those sounds??

OK, just loaded two identical instruments, I assumed the "+" version is the LP X installed version. I inspected their internal makeup, all parameters are set exactly the same, they use identical samples. But somehow the "old" one properly responds to CC1, and switches sounds via the modwheel, where the "+" (LP X) version does not respond to CC 1 and sticks to aaah's.

Smart controls appear also identical on both.

My workaround: use the LP9 instrument... I have no idea how to map keyswitches to groups, if that even is user-controllable...

I did look some more into it, and in fact there is a difference: in the LP9 choirs the articulation groups are mapped directly to CC1 value's, in LP X choirs they are mapped to articulation ID's. To use these ID's, you have to use the modulation matrix in the EXS24 to actually assign them to a(ny) MIDI controller, otherwise it just doesn't do anything.

These parameters are by default not visible in the EXS24 group view, you have to enable 'm first, I overlooked that.

I think you are accessing a choir preset directly in or from the EXS 24 and not a Library Patch.... that uses an EXS 24 preset... as well as a few other things.

Try the following....

Create a new Software Instrument track

Open the Library if it isn't open already...

Select Orchestra > Choirs > Boys Chamber Choir..

Now click on the Show Smart Control Button at the top of the screen

You should now see in the Smart Control window, the buttons for the various articulations..

Where as I think this is what you might be seeing and doing....

Library patches are actually not just a preset from a software instrument but other things too like FX plugins and so on added to the track / channel strip...

Think of library patches like a 'performance' on certain hardware synths compared to a single 'preset....'

What happens, I think, is that the smart controls are mapped to a particular instrument - or channel strip setting - and then you switch instruments to one that isn't mapped. The smart controls don't update in this case. There are some choirs that don't have the ooh, ahh, mmm articulation IDs (or at least not a smart control panel mapped to them). So chances are you've got one of those choirs loaded, but are still looking at the previous choir's smart control. I'm going to guess that the ones that have this are labelled with a + in the library, but not all with the + may be mapped with those ooh ahh buttons. I also don't know if you need to look at Channel Strip settings vs EXS24 instruments in the library.

I didn't look close enough at that. I was just concerned with why they would work or not. Which ones are mapped to what is a different question.

Edit: I guess I mean, and didn't really make clear in the first post, that you can get those settings by choosing a channel strip (I guess) and then switching the EXS instrument. The smart control stays, but the mapping is gone.

I have no events, I'm testing this with live input only...

The "+" instruments simply don't react to modwheel input... and I do not see any smart controls linked to articulation ID's, actually... plus the fact that the "old" instrument works and the newer doesn't. Also, I cannot see how this can be corrected. The only thing is, they may have mapped it to a different controller...? But I'm not perpared to go through all CC numbers to find the right one...

You're very welcome KC. 🙂

It helped me to, learning about these group assignment parameters (and articulation ID's) in EXS24, as they were unexplored territories for me. It made me realise that you can now also play a choir-chord built up of any of ther four articulations (like this CM7 chord: C note: mmm, E: uuu, G: ooo and B: aaa.) With the direct controller to group assignments as in LP9, that wasn't really possible without "rebuilding" the sampler instrument.
