iPhone5 shuts down at 20%-30% battery since new IOS7 was installed

Ever since I installed the new IOS 7 operating system the day it premiered, not only do I have battery issues in which it drains quickly (seems to be a common occurrence) but now if I am using the phone (app, imsg, etc) when it gets down to about 30%, sometimes 23% the phone completely shuts off as if it was at 0% battery life (I say that exact number because it's been at exactly 23% on a few occasions where the phone shut off). The icon pops up that looks like a drained battery with an indication to plug it in, and when I plug it in the phone turns itself on immediately and then works fine. I was told to reset it, hard reset it etc, all of which I tried and to no avail. I have spoken with someone from Apple and they are telling me I need a new battery. The phone is just over a year old (so of course, they won't cover the battery replacement even though the issue started about two weeks ago and it's now two weeks past it's 1 year warranty), and I highly doubt it's a coincidence that the battery is suddenly acting up after the new operating system update. Is anyone having this same issue? Helpful comments would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Which is why all our problems are happening RIGHT AFTER THE WARRANTY IS GONE. Now that just infuriates the heck out of me!

This is my 4th iPhone. And I have an iMac. Steve Jobs never would have tolerated this crap. It's harder to get new customers than keep the ones you have. Especially is they're getting screwed and spread the word. Bad business all around.

This whole thing has been such an ordeal for me too. The problem started *the day after* I updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 7.0.4 from iOS 7, yet several still insist it's a battery issue and nothing else!

I've been in the market for a small tablet for a month now. Officially removed any iOS devices from my list of alternatives and bought a Windows 8.1 tablet instead. Not paying a premium for Apple products when a problem takes this long to fix, if at all. Windows 7 and 8 have been way more stable for me over the past 6 months anyway.

Lost loyalty for a trivial software update and test issue. (Trivial for a business with so much cash, at least.)

Bad business, Apple.

Had the same issues with my IPhone 5 switching itself off with at least 20% battery left. I took it to Apple and he said I had too many apps running and that I had to remember to close them by pressing the start button twice and swiping the apps upwards. It did work for a while bit now started dying at 28% battery left. It took it back to Apple yesterday and he completely wiped it and started again as he recon it was a software issue. So far so good. Phone working fine with just 9% battery left.

I've also had the problem since December where it will shutdown at any point below 30% battery life. It will turn off as if it has 0% battery and any attempt to turn it back on either gives no response or a low battery indicator and refuses to start. On a rare occasion, if I wait long enough, it will allow me to start up the phone again without charging.

Just installed the iOS 7.1 update yesterday and when my phone dipped to 29% it immediately shut down. So it seems that Apple hasn't actually fixed the problem yet.

I had a similar ray of hope with the 7.0.6 update and that quickly disappeared. Went to the Apple store yesterday and was told that unless we see something on an official Apple webpage, we shouldn't even assume that it's a known issue that's acknowledged by Apple.

Of course I requested a battery checkup. Mine came in at about 55% good, and the Genius did a decent job trying to convince me that the 45% badness is the sole reason for the issues. I'm not buying it. Not when this started the DAY AFTER I updated to 7.0.4... it has to be connected to the software update somehow.

Looks like Apple hasn't acknowledged this officially, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. It's a bit ridiculous that I trust my four year old iphone 4 to be way more stable and reliable than my year and a half old iphone 5 right this moment.

If nothing changes, I'd prefer to replace the battery myself than swap my phone with another perhaps new, perhaps refurbished, or perhaps both, at an Apple Store.

I loved my iphone 5 until 7.0.4 came along. The phone has hardly been worth the trouble since then, and it has been over a couple months now.

Good for you!

It's now been a couple charge cycles since I updated to iOS 7.1

The good news: Both times, I got all the way down to 1%

The bad news: Both times, the moment I plugged it in to charge, the battery indicator jumped from 1% to 14-18% within a couple seconds.

Also, the battery drainage issue isn't gone completely either. It just drains very fast once I'm down to 20% remaining.

I want to try turning off the background app refresh for the 4-5 apps I use it for, but what good is a smartphone when I can't receive Facebook messages as they're sent, or driving directions while I'm talking while driving?

I think I may just succumb to the ' setup as new ' advice before changing batteries. It's a bit ridiculous that Apple support staff have very casually suggested, "Just spare a weekend," as a viable alternative.

It's not what I expect when I pay a premium.

Stuff "Doesn't just work" anymore I suppose.

Ok, here we go. I did think this was a software issue, but now I'm pretty convinced it's the bogus battery! So, if you're with Vodafone UK and have 5 star care, send it for repair. Go to your nearest store and tell them all about it. I did and 12 days later I got a brand new replacement phone. I was past the year warranty given by Apple, but Vodafone give you a two year warranty. If this applies to you, or if you have more than a year's cover with your carrier, send it for repair. If not, just pay $80 (£55) for a new battery from Apple and charge it. As soon as it reads 100% unplug it and use it until it shuts off at 0%. Always follow this pattern for the life of the new battery. It will last much longer. Hope this helps

Still I feel this is an Apple problem. I have 4 iphones. starting with 2 4 year old iphone 4(s) still running iOS6. They run great. Use them as kid devices and juke boxes. Always being used and charged. They never had a problem. But my 2 iphone5(s) both have this problem. Yes it may be batt related but only did ios 7.0.4 expose it for some reason. (SO WISH I CAN PUT iOS 6 BACK ON TO PROVE IT).

New Batt it is. I have 7 more months on contract. Then we think about a possible switch.
