iPhone5 shuts down at 20%-30% battery since new IOS7 was installed

Ever since I installed the new IOS 7 operating system the day it premiered, not only do I have battery issues in which it drains quickly (seems to be a common occurrence) but now if I am using the phone (app, imsg, etc) when it gets down to about 30%, sometimes 23% the phone completely shuts off as if it was at 0% battery life (I say that exact number because it's been at exactly 23% on a few occasions where the phone shut off). The icon pops up that looks like a drained battery with an indication to plug it in, and when I plug it in the phone turns itself on immediately and then works fine. I was told to reset it, hard reset it etc, all of which I tried and to no avail. I have spoken with someone from Apple and they are telling me I need a new battery. The phone is just over a year old (so of course, they won't cover the battery replacement even though the issue started about two weeks ago and it's now two weeks past it's 1 year warranty), and I highly doubt it's a coincidence that the battery is suddenly acting up after the new operating system update. Is anyone having this same issue? Helpful comments would be appreciated. Thanks :)

I went to Apple on Sat. They did a quick batt test on my phone. did some funky test that sent an email like message to the tech's ipad with the status. I could not see what he ran. But the graph put me on the line of the red zone. He said I need a new Batt. As I am over 1 yr old It would cost me 80 bucks. He did not want to hear about the others all having this issue as they upgraded to iOS7. Said forums are just forums.


I did not do it yet as I would like to see a little further as to what happens here. But I went skiing this weekend. It certainly happens a lot more when the batt is cold. I feel this is a combination of both the Batt and the new iOS. The new Ios i feel measures batt draw and usage differently causing it to crap out. Would a new batt fix this? probably. How I would love to install iOS 6 again to prove this.

I don't even think it's iOS 7, but rather iOS 7.0.4 specifically. I had iOS 7 previously but never had these problems before 7.0.4.


If 7.1 doesn't solve the problem I'm going to get a replacement battery kit from ifixit.com for $30 or so and do it myself. The procedure doesn't seem that difficult at all.

This is not a software problem. The battery needs to be replaced!


This started happening to my phone right about the 1 year mark but I ignored it because I thought it was a glitch, maybe some APP, and generally it wasn't too unbearable of a problem. I was too busy to get it checked out and the problem occured before I upgraded to iOS7.


This weekend it shut off at around 40% power so I finally went to the Genius Bar. They ran diagnostics and the report said the battery "Needs Service". The guy told me it'll be $80 since my warranty expired!!! I refused to pay that and they said that's too bad and they cannot help me then.


I told them I understand that the battery life diminishes over time and I'm ok with that, but at least the software power indicator should be accurate! They said nothing can be done unless I pay the $80 to replace the battery, but as a courtesy they can do a factory reset for me free of charge. But also stated that they cannot guarentee that that will fix the problem. Obviously that is useless, and they know it.


I've been happy with all my Apple purchases until now. And usually the customer service is stellar, no questions asked. But now I'm extremely disappointed with this POS device.


The guy even said that the battery probably has about 1000 charge cycles and that I use my phone too much. OK THERE...even if I charge my phone twice a day from full charge to completely drained which is UNLIKELY, that's like 730 cycles in a year. The battery should not need replacement after ONE year of use.


Basically, if you're gonna buy an iPhone that means you'll need to budget $80/year just to keep it running.

I will explain the cause in more detail, The reason your Iphone is dying between 20%-30% is because you charge your phone without letting it completely dye before doing so, after so long your phone starts to recognize when you plug you most commonly plug your phone is, which causes your phone to die at an unreasonabe persentage, I have been dealing with Iphones since day 1, There is really no way to completely drain your battery to get it to reset, but there is 3 sort of solutions you can do. 1. Once your phone says the battery is low plug it into the charger, most likely after you plug your phone in the battery persentage will go up or down and show you what actual % your battery is on, after doing that let it die completely, plug it in, and wait for it to turn back off, after doing so keep it plugged in and hold down the power button until "slide to power off" comes up, power it down and your phone will continue to charge while it is off, wait about 2 hours so it can fully charge, unplug your phone from the charge and power it back on. 2. Go to youtube and look up a video on how to replace your Iphones battery, but instead of actually replacing it just unhook it from your phone and wait 10-15 minutes then plug it back in and put your phone back together and turn on your phone. 3. Go to http://www.directfix.com/ and buy another battery, they aren't as expensive as you think, and get it replaced. (WARNING): only do option 2 and 3 if your Iphone is no longer covered by Apple Care, Otherwise you can void your warrenty.

No sir that is NOT the cause of the issue most people are having. For most of us, this issue started SUDDENLY with one of the iOS 7.0.x updates. For me it was 7.0.4. Before that update it had NEVER died with considerable reported battery percentage left.


Yes batteries do wear out, but it's gradual over time. I charge my phone every single night, and as I said this has never happened before 7.0.4 in the year+ time that I've had my iPhone 5.

I might believe xxfamousxx if we had all bought our phones at the exact same time. But I bought mine a year after my wife bought hers and we both started experiencing the same problem IMMEDIATELY upon updating to 7.0.4.


So how would one battery that's a year older than another battery start having issues at the same time if it has to do with how you discharge your battery? That makes no sense.

same issue here!!! ive noticed it has gotten worse over the past couple of weeks. I went out for a run yesterday with a 100% charge and 40minutes in my phone died. then when i plugged it in to recharge it it said it was at 96% battery life... i made an appointment with apple for next week so hopefully there's a resolution. I NEVER had any issues prior to ios7

Just to add to this list. Exact same problem here on my wifes phone. Phone shut's down at the 20-30% mark, then around 10 minutes later you can turn it on and it still reads 20-30%, but only lasts a couple of minutes before shutting down again.


Definitly seems to coincide with the iOS 7 release (and from other posts here, it seems to be 7.0.4 that is responsible).


To say she is frustrated with this is an understatement!


It's also frustrating for me as it was me that recommended the iPhone 5 to her in the first place!

Ok yall I had the same exact problem with my battery draining as many of you have stated it was draning fast. after a couple days with this problem, i ended up charging my phone in a dark room and noticed I had light leaking out the front bezel. what i discoverd next i could not believe, my battery had expanded to the point were it made my screen pop off the bezel. and for my luck my phone was out of warrenty by 3 months I made an appoitment with apple they checked out my phone and i was in and out with another phone in 5min even with my phone being out of warrenty.

I have the same problem everyone else here has (phone randomly shutting down at 20-30%). My issue also started after applying the update to OS 7. This is what discusts me:


I was at the Apple store today before ever reading any of this stuff online. I asked them to run a Diagnostic on my phone and explained the exact problem everyone here has ( exactly like everyone else explains it). The lady tells me my battery is down to 80% power. She tells me it's bad and needs replaced but I'm 3 months out of warranty. We talk about some things, and she brings someone from the back out to explain it better. THE TECH FROM THE BACK OF THE STORE TELLS ME THE BATTERY IS RATED FOR 500 CYCLES!!!. Yes, you read that right.. 500. That is, less than 1.5 years with 1 nightly charge. In the Warranty literature, Apple calls the battery a "consumable" item. This means they expect it to go bad, and the fact that they chose a battery for their phone knowing it was rated for 500 cycles means they want you to have to get it fixed or buy a new phone. They trapped us.


The weird thing is, is that it started for me after the update as well.


Here's the kicker.. The lady in the Apple store told me that to help me with the issue, the company was nice enough to include a removable soft cell battery so I could replace it when it goes bad instead of paying for a whole new divice. They wanted to charge $80 USD to do so. I walked out, 30 ft away to a little fix your phone desk in the middle of the mall. He offered to do it for $50.


Apple put a junk battery in the phone.. and now they are making the customers eat their mistake. I was talked into iphone... and have enjoyed it thoroughly, but this is a deal breaker. Never an Apple customer again.


Edit: I forgot to add the part where they tried to tell me that somehow I am hard on my phone, and that the way I use it caused my battery to fail "sooner than expected". SOONER THAN EXPECTED. How am I any harder on my battery than anyone else.. the phone uses a certain amount of voltage through a hardware circuit to operate. Using the phone does not alter anything, it simply uses the phone as intended. Discusted
