Notepad replacement on the iMac

I'm a new iMac user. So far so good. In PC land I could use notepad for quick notes and things. Very simple. And it had a feature that I really liked.

I could press F5 and insert the date and time.

Is there any such replacement for editing TEXT files on the Mac that would also have that feature? It needs to be light weight and fast to load if possible.

Thanks

Well that's the best so far. I'll have to research those apps. The apple script works so well that if I can figure out how to assign it to a key within TextEdit it will work fine. Maybe a good AppleScript book is in order.

Anyway, it didn't open two windows this time and it (the script) seems to work well.

Thanks much.

Hello RWSmith,

O.K., I think I have found the final piece of your puzzle.

I found a program that will enable you to assign a hot-key to your scripts 🙂

It's called FastScripts:

http://www.red-sweater.com/fastscripts/index.html

They have a full version and a "Lite" version. So, you might see if the free "Lite" version will do what you want. If not, go for the full version.

With this program, and the scripts you've already been provided, I think you might have a complete solution 🙂

I hope this helps.

P.S., feel free to mark any of the posts in this thread "helpful"
and / or "solved" if you found them useful 🙂

Anyway, I hope this gets your system exactly as you want it. Let me know.

"FastScripts also supports a keyboard shortcut for accessing the menu."

Close but no cigar. I will mark your post as helpful though.

The menu means the menu and then find the script and then execute it. I want to hit F5 or some other 'key' and have the date entered. But only in TextEdit or other light and fast text editor.

I'm still looking for a complete alternative to the notepad F5 function.

Thanks for your help though. I'm sure there's a solution out there.
