iPhone 5 shuts down with plenty of battery life left

I have been having some serious iPhone problems lately. I upgraded to iOS 7 when it first came out and only had a few issues, now more recently I am having problems, especially with the battery. My battery meter seems to be inaccuriate or the battery itself is jacked. My battery seems to drain very quickly even when I am not using my phone. I have done all the tricks to save the battery; turned off Bluetooth, turn off auto refresh for backgroud apps, turned off the motion screen, no dymanic background, etc. However my battery still drains quicker than normal. Lately my phone completely shuts itself off and shows me the dead battery icon even though I have anywhere between 20 and 40 left on my battery. When I plug my phone back in after it dies the battery icon shows a different and yet higher battery life then what it was at when it shut off. I have also noticed that my phone shuts off after I use my camera. THAT part is really annoying.

Is this an iOS 7 issue or is there something wrong with my phone? I have insurance on my phone so I can have it replaced, but the cost to replace my phone is more than if I were to get a new and DIFFERENT phone altogether.

I have the same problem every since the iOS7 update. It's ridiculous! It will shut down from 13 % up to 30% and when I try to turn it back on (lock button) it will show the 'need to charge' photo. When I press the home button & lock button though it turns on and shows the battery % only to shut down a few minutes later. I have my iphone (5) for roughly 10 months and it's in perfect condition, never dropped it, not one scratch and it makes me angry seeing little annoying bugs like this that ruin an otherwise great phone. Please Apple, fix this soon!

Apple offer a one year warranty on phones which predominantly are sold on two year contracts,

Apple does not offer a 2 year contract.

However, most people did not get their phones direct from Apple, so their contract is with their service provider

Even if they purchased the iPhone from Apple, the contract is with their provider, not Apple.

I had this problem with a previous 4S. I phoned Orange and they replaced it even though I was 6 months away from the end of my contract.

Upgraded to 5S with EE and now I'm having the same problem. Doesn't happen every time but probably once a week or so. EE don't want to know - 'it's an Apple issue' they say. I've reset the phone and restored from an ITunes back up but that hasn't worked.

I phone Apple and they do some sort of diagnosic over the phone and tell me the phones OK, it's a software issue. Of course they can't be any more specific than that.

Their advice? Reset the phone to factory settings. Set up the phone from new, not from the back up, and then one by one install the previous apps, run the phone and see if the problem recurs.

What a lot of absolute nonsense. That's a very time consuming task and one taht coulkd take a long tme to flsuh out teh actual problem given that it's an intermittent fault.

Pleased to see that I'm not the only one having problems.

There are 500,000,000 iPhones that have been sold. No matter what problem you have I guarantee that some of the other 499,000,000 owners will have it. So there is no point in being pleased that the obvious is true. And the people who have the problem will post; the millions who don't have it probably don't even know there is a forum to discuss it.

Instead of being pleased perhaps you could read a few of the thousands of posts about how other people have fixed the problem. Unless you would rather just be pleased and continue to live with the problem rather than fix it.

What an obnoxious and unhelpful post. I'm not sure what your problem is fella but maybe you should just butt out unless you have something constructive to add? I'm pleased that it's a known problem not just affecting me, but others. What that means is that there is more chance of finding a solution as you say. I'm not at all pleased that others are having to go through this experience.

For your info, I've tried all of the suggestions given but once again Apple are asking me to take it all back to factory settings, and this time run the phone for a while 'naked' as it were. They'll run some diagnostics and then ask me to reload from a back up. Strangely enough, they'd already told me to do this but told me not to restore it from a previous back up, in case the 'bug' was in that backed up software.

They've also told me the bug could be in a photograph, song or video that I have on my phone. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Given the phone worked perfectly for 4 months, you'll excuse my scepticism.

I would strongly suggest replacing the battery yourself which you can buy the battery and tools for under 20 dollars from amazon. Like you I took my phone in to apple which they told me my battery was good. My at the time was 18 months old. My phone would shut off with 30 to 50 percent. Would only turn on when I plugged it into the wall to turn it back on. I tried everything resetting the phone to factory setting, running the battery down and recharge it for 8 hours. Nothing worked. My last attempt was to replace the battery. I did it my self because I did not want to ripped off by apple. It has been almost 4 months now and have not had the phone shut off with 35 plus percentage left. Phone does not get hot when charging. I. Hope this helps.

The battery in your phone is getting old and it starts expanding. When it expands it is unable to complete a full circuit thus making the percent jump areound and power off at random times. If you do not get a new battery your current one will keep expanding inside your phone and can apply so much pressure that the screen shatters.

Dear Apple team,

I am also facing the battery problem for my iPhone 5.

My iPhone 5 shuts down when battery is around 25%-30%. After a few minutes I can turn it on and battery still shows around 25%-30%. It happens again when it goes down to 12%-15% and again around 5%-8%...

- I've already drained the maximum amount of battery I could until I saw it showing 1%.

- I've reset the phone (home+on buttons for 10 secs).

- I've installed the App Battery to help cherging.

- I've charged the phone to 100% (full cycle).

Nothing works... What's the problem???

There is no "Apple Team" here; just other users like you in this user-to-user tech forum.

You've done an excellent job of troubleshooting, so I think the only logical conclusion is that your phone needs a new battery. If it's in warranty Apple will replace the battery free. If its out of warranty the cost is $79. You can find independent shops that will do it for less, and you can buy kits to do it yourself.
