In the market for a portable writing product since my MacBook Pro is getting older and not that easy to carry around. Write in Word and have a blog to manage. Would an iPad work easily or should I choose MacBook Air? Esp. since I'll need to purchase a new MBP later.

deggie nailed it. Macbook Air all the way. Put on word and enjoy. If you want small go with the 11"...I prefer the 13" myself.

Go for the air. the keyboard and broader compatibility will be handy.
PS) Did those geniuses show you how to use "any size keyboard", or "any size keyboard, as long as it's bluetooth and not USB wired or wireless"?
The iPad cannot use ANY mouse or trackpad.
The MBP and MBA have a built in trackpad
You can buy an iMac with either a Magic Trackpad or a Magic Mouse.
Logitech trackpads will work with OS X.
