iMac Time Machine is not detecting WD My Cloud drive

Hi,

I just got myself a WD My Cloud drive which supposely able to use as Time Machine.

My Time Machine can't see the "drive/folder" for TimeMachine backup but I can still use the drive/folder to file transfer.

Anyone has any idea what is wrong?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Thank you so much ... I worked PERFECTLY for me ... Despite all the 'NOT-Apple-Unfriendly' comments here on this site, I am glad there is a 3rd party supplier who 'tries' to connect to the Apple-proprietary environment .. I am a full-on Apple liker ... I have my own 2TB Timecapsule ... and I am glad I could connect this less-expensive WD device next to my other apple equipment for my daughters (remote-available share possibilities of pictures, movies, music and back-ups for their mac's ... ) ..

I had set up the WD Smart Cloud to backup my MacBook Pro.

Everything appeared to be working OK.

My MacBook Pro hard drive died and got replaced.

I am unable to restore using the WD backup using migration assistant, even though it initially recognizes it. I eventually get messages saying "it appears that the backup is in use... make sure it is not mounted by another machine" and "No volumes found in backup".

I think this is was CSound1 is trying to say... you can get the WD to act like it's backing stuff up, but what it's creating is completely useless.

Good luck if your hard drive goes bad.

Had the same problem & have just solved it!

Problem:

The NAS was mounted with my Macbook via SMB and not with the AFP-Protocol.

SMB was the choice i connected the first time with, didnt even check it again...

Changing the Network-Sharing Protocol to afp://<ip-adress of the NAS> is now working for me.

Good Luck

Most useful response so far.
I have a MyCloud EX2 that worked fine for a while and then started failing to backup.

Followed these steps and is back again working fine and managing the Time Machine Backups of 2 of my Macs on the network.

It seems that the backup disk goes into "ghost mode" from time to time, but waking it up from the WD My Cloud Dashboard and re selecting it from Time Machine Preferences put it back to work just ok.

Thanks for your help/
