There are reports of iPhone contacts suddenly missing -- showing only numbers, no names (except for Facebook contacts).
Anyone have a fix?
I had this problem after restoring a backup onto my new phone. I found that my Outlook (Hotmail, actually) account wasn't connected to my Contacts on my phone, so I added it back. Even though I had connected my account to Mail (Settings>Mail>Accounts>Add Account), when I checked the Contacts screen in Settings only my iCloud account was connected and not my Outlook account.
So try this:
Settings>Contacts>Accounts>Add Account
Make sure the Contacts switch is turned on.
What did you do to fix this. I toggled contacts off and it didn't do anything.
Sorry, dumb question, but when you say toggle off and on, are you supposed to leave it on where it says "your contacts will be merged with iCloud?
Yes - that is the prompt you get when you turn them back on. How you answer the Merge question doesn't really matter - your choice. You just want to answer it so it turns Contacts back on.

I also deleted an old work Exchange email and seem to have lost most of my contact names. Thing is, I can't add it back.

The iCloud Contacts toggle didn't work for me. What did you do?
Go to Whatsapp -> Accounts -> Change Number -> put same number for both -> after I did this numbers that had no name synced with my contact list.

Have you tried the iCloud Contacts toggle on/off as suggested by previous posters? This didn't work for me but it seems to have worked for many others.

This happened to me too after adding a contact from WhatsApp.
I went into my settings->WhatsApp-> and then turned off "Allow Whatsapp to access contacts." Fixed the problem.
How wkere do I ckeck I cloud tomfimd the toggle?
