Sore, itchy, red eyes !

I received my black MB2 a week ago and i was absolutely stunned by the design, OSX and look. Since i started using it, i noticed my eyes always getting tired after 1-2 hours of usage.
Comparing side by side with my Toshiba 15.4", the font On Mac is blurry/greyish/unclear and the colors are faded compared to the Toshiba.

The screen on the Toshiba is so alive compared to the Mac, the other one looks dull and faded ...

Anyone else with similar issues ?
PS: I know i can use the font smoothing and Color profiles to adjust, but can not get any closer to my Toshiba.

Make sure you have the resolution set for the maximum available. I have noticed when you go lower type seems blurred and colors slightly faded.

To check:
1-Go to System Preferences in the Dock.
2-Click Display.
3-Click Display tab.
4-Check to make sure the resolution is at maximum.
5-Under Colors make sure it is set to Millions.
6-Click Colors tab.
7-Under Display Profile you can change and see the differences in the background. You can also Calibrate your monitor from the Calibrate tab on the right hand side.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions, i've spent quite a bit of time trying to fiddle with smoothing, color calibration, ...

I think the problem is when I am comparing the MAcBook to my other laptop, i've been used to a certain size and i beleive the TOshiba screen is much brighter and vivid than the MacBook.

How does bringing my MB to an apple store help if i didnt buy it from that store ? Are they supposed to support any apple product even if not baught from their store ?

THanks.

A Toshiba display brighter and more vivid than the MacBook? I doubt it. But as has already been suggested, make sure you have the MacBook display set to 1280x800. Unlike CRTs, an LCD has one native display and all other sizes will be interpolated resulting in fuzziness.

All Apple resellers are required to perform warranty service. A tech or salesperson can look at the computer and immediately tell you if it is operating normally or should be repaired.

To my eyes, the Toshiba TruBrite screen is more vivid than the MB. I was expecting the MB to be superior, but my eyes are saying otherwise. I will try to take a pic if possible and post it. All settings are correct on the MB, max res, million colors, i even spent countless hours trying to calibrate the **** display.

Thank you for that info.

silly thought, but is it possible your screen isn't
at maximum resolution, because that can make the text
fuzzy

Thanks, but yeah my res is at max. I called Apple and we went thru a series of tests, last one they recommended is to do an install and archive. but i doubt why that could solve the problem, it's a brand new machine (2 wks old).

I went to an apple store and checked other Mac, they all exhibit the same problem. The font is just not clear and sharp. The only application that the font was clear and sharp was terminal.

I will try to take pics of my MB fonts and my Toshiba ans post to the forums to see if other users have the same font rendering issues.

just do Command-Shift-4 and take a pic of the area you want, put it in your HD, and then go here ( http://imageshack.us/) and upload the image...then, when you do the post and you want to show the image do the HTML like this: User uploaded file

then make sure that when you post the reply that you preview it first, otherwise you will just see the HTML, not the image
for instance, you will notice my icon doesn't appear because i'm not gonna preview this message

sorry, just wanted to make sure you knew that

I did compare my black book to other laptop screen (HP cn9600, ze5400, Sony Vaio PG545, Acer travelmate, etc), too bad I don't have toshiba as reference here and I'm not saying that my MacBook screen is the best, but I like it and still readable and viewable..

Look like you already have a good comparison and your eyes like the Toshiba better, and even when you went to apple store, you said that it all looks with the same problems to you.

So I believe it is the apple standard lcd that is not comfortable enough for your eyes, not that your MacBook or the whole MAcBook production have problem.

So it is an individual preference for what I can say.

Just try the MacBook using windows xp, maybe it will shows similarity, since the nuance from Windows are similar rather to compare it from OS X interface screen (light bluish) to Windows interface screen (dark bluish). Or tyr to spanning it to external lcd to see if the glossy lcd screen you don't like, or the way os X projected the screen and managed the color management that is not as you expected.

Good Luck.

Thanks to all for their suggestions. Mystery Solved. Apple has baught a company sometime and since then (OS v8) changed their display drivers from bitmaps/native font to postscript driver.
Hence the less than clear image like font display.

Windows still uses bitmap/native font support ... So i guess it is meant to look like that, you can judge from the pics referenced in the URLs. Clearly the MB text rendering is very inferior to the one from my Toshiba. Dont forget to click on the pic to view it in full mode.

Dont know what to do now, it is really bothering me, but i love the Mac. But if i cant use it to read/browse forums/etc... whats the point !!!
