Menu/dock items won't highlight, Logic unusable

Menu items do not highlight, mousing-over menu names does not select them and the names of dock icons do not appear. Also, in Logic Pro 9, the zoom tool seems to be permanently enabled and a click event seems to be permanently triggered so that the program just constantly zooms in and out with no remedy except Force Quit.

This problem came on suddenly whilst using Logic Pro. Logic is now completely unusable to me.

I have tried trashing the Finder, dock and systemui preference files and restarting the computer. I have also tried unplugging all peripherals and repairing permissions, and I created a new user account, but the problem still remains.
