Strange Icons during Startup

Recently my Ibook has something new happening during startup. I am new to Apples, and as I have invested in three so far, I need to figure out what is going on.

Immediately upon powerup, the first screen I get shows a folder icon with a globe in it. Depending whether or not internet access is available, this icon may remain for 2 -3 minutes. It is immediately followed by a folder icon with two faces on it (kind of a ying-yang face). This icon remains depending on internet availability up to 4 minutes. Then regular startup resumes.

I also recently have trouble with my email settings for accounts suddenly disappearing, and I suspect this "StartUp folder" deal is related , based on the internet availability deal.

What are these rogue icons, and how do it stop what is going on?

These are not rogue icons; they indicate that your Mac has Network Boot disk chosen for startup, and when it cannot find it, it finally resorts to the only startup disk it can find. Unless you're on a Mac network, you should not have a network boot disk chosen.

To change this, open System Preferences->Startup Disk and select the OS X disk that is shown there, then quit. The next time you start your Mac, it should startup from that disk. That may very well solve your Internet access problem, too.
