How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

So, KiltedTim, you agree what Apple has done to their paying customers. You agree with them taking your choice in keeping your information private and now giving it to them and their control. I've spent thousands of dollars on Apple products. But, believe me, if this doesn't change it will be the last penny they ever get from me.

I didn't say I agreed with anything.

Here are the facts:

Fact: Sync Services, which provided the ability to sync an iOS device with the local contacts and calendars via USB has been removed from Mavericks.

Fact: No one is holding a gun to your head, or anyone else's, and forcing them to use Mavericks.

Fact: Discussing Apple policies or policy decisions is prohibited by the TOS. The technical question that was asked was addressed long ago. This thread should be dead, locked, or deleted by now. Those of you who continue beating the dead horse of why, or whether it was 'right' or 'smart' or a 'strategic blunder' for Apple to make the change are behaving like trollish little children. Move on already.

Do you also block people in the left lane who want to go faster than you and the speed limit? Me thinks you move aside ... 😉

I am really afraid of what will come next. Apple has total control over my device. Every software update, which should provide security, will put me more and more into their "jail". I have enough and my next phone and OS will be Open Source, even if that means more work in the first place. I cannot trust Apple anymore, although their energy efficient OS Maverick really impressed me.

I think his position doesn't show bias towards either side, I think he is simply implying that whining on a technical support forum is pointless.

apple.com/feedback - that's where you complain

These are people volunteering their own time to try to help others with technical issues. Apple does not read these forums. All the threads of whining make it so less people get help with their issues. Please use the proper channels.

some insider say that soft and hardware companies are forced by the gouverment to keep some doors open in their products for gaining access to user information (zero days) ... but this wide open door is to obvious!

to be a bit more constructive: after the bug I have with Maverick's cardDAV server, I use an old iMac from the office to do the wired sync. runs on 10.6.8 .... best OS Apple made and what a joy to have a choice!

Did you guys hear the joke about apple's new Bluetooth mouse and keyboard?

They only work with an icloud account! LOL.

The number of people who have signed the online petition to bring back local sync has tripled in 3 days. They'll be at 10,000 in no time. So this issue is far from dead! It's only just begun.

Apple is surely taking massive flak from businesses all over the world right now so you are right about how trivial this thread is.

Really, I've seen nothing in the tech press at all about it. If you think a substantial number of people care, you're deluded. If you think businesses care, you're insane. Businesses A) Don't use Macs in the enterprise (I wish they did, but lets be real, enterprise penetration is extremely small), and B) Do NOT want employees running iTunes on company computers.

Somewhere around 95% of the iPhone users out there don't even know what a backup is... much less how to sync anything locally with their Macs...

... and the big brother's CLOUD is the answer?

Apparently you sync same way via iTunes just by simply hitting SYNC button to go locally over wire, you do not have to set up your apple account, setup your icloud, sign in, setup your icloud email, connect to Internet, and wait … and wait … .

Don’t dare to sign off from icloud after because your calendar data will be wiped out from Mac … yes … wiped out clean!
