How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

So to sync my phone with my computer, just like I always have, I now need to put all my information in "the cloud"? This is so frustrating it makes me want to find another phone supplier and another computer maker; of course the other options will likely prove just as frustrating. I wonder why Apple wants all my information in the cloud instead of on my devices? And I wonder why I don't have a choice? My phone now shows me songs that I can't play and haven't put on my phone but I can purchase them from the cloud? Thank you for that. I used to think well of Apple; now I see they're trying to take advantage of me in sneaky and manipulative ways and it drives me crazy because in a free market I'm supposed to have options but in this market my options don't feel like actual alternatives, just more of the same and probably less pleasant to use.

Syncmate tells me it won't work with OSX 10.9 because of something Apple did and that they're working on a solution. Maybe I don't need an iPhone after all. Pre-paid is sounding better and better and maybe the voice call quality will be decent for a change.

SyncMate are updating their version to work with Mavericks. Companies have had ample time to update their software to work with new OSXs. I don't know how pre-paid will fix your syncing problems. You say you don't have options. Read the options give in this thread alone. You can change to Windows. iTunes still syncs calendars and contacts on Windows....for now.

Everyone has choices. Nobody is against you making yours. But there is nothing we other users can do to help your issues other than giving you Apple' proper feedback link and wishing you luck that enough people complain for them to reinstate the option.

Welcome to the forums.

If you are willing to risk your data to Beta software here is where Eltima are recruiting testers for the next version…

There are several possible solutions that have been posted here many, many times, skim back a few pages to see your options.

Also check the 'user tips' for info on Biakal (one option) & the possibility of reverting if you upgraded.

I buy at least 1-2 Apple devices a year and I do spend over 2000.00 per year. Not upgrading to Mavericks is only a temporary bandaid to a bigger problem. If one of the devices synced via cabled is upgraded to iOS7, like a iPhone 5s, you will get a sync error saying the new phone isnt compatible with the current version of iTunes. So you are screwed either way. You will be forced to retain older hardware and even thats not safe......if you have to restore either device, you will automatically be upgraded to the latest version of iTunes which doesnt support cable sync. If Apple doesnt return this functionality, I will be forced to go back to a PC.

That is your choice. There are options in this thread, repeated numerous times. Windows are also flogging their new Cloud service as well. So if you wish to keep up to date with software, you will need to change your computer habits. If not, just stay with older software. No one is forcing you to use Mavericks.

Syncmate 5 Beta seems to be working for Calendar and Contacts with iphone 4s and Mavericks so thank you Eltima. Apple Computer, I think you're putting your interests ahead of your customers and that's a bummer.

As has been mentioned, there are over 320 million iCloud accounts. I think that most of those customers are happy.

Syncmate 5 seems to work fine with ios7 and mavericks and an iphone 4s. It's fine to say this forum is just for solving problems and people don't need to vent their frustration here but I think people are justifiably frustrated since I don't really see how Apple could get here unless they really wanted everyone to put their information in 'the cloud'; my point is there's a context in which things happen and I can at least hope this is someplace where Apple might pay attention. I'd love to hear about better places to tell the various monoliths what I think but that's surely even further off topic.

I am still having trouble getting SyncMate to handle my Contacts. I am using iOS 6.1.3 on my iPhone — could that be the problem?

Regarding your second question, it's against the 'terms of use' (TOU) to post details here about how to express your view on this subject outside this thread (with the exception of http://www.apple.com/feedback/). Such information will be removed by the watchful monitors. Of course a number of the participants here do have this information. You may wish to contact somebody privately.

Very well said, jt8780. I feel exactly the same way.

The big question is, why? Why did Apple take local syncing function away??? It wasn't hurting anyone. It can only be a deliberate strategy, to get everyone onto iCloud. Once people use iCloud and get use to it, that's when the money-making for Apple begins. Eventually you get talked into buying more storage space and what ever else there is awaylable to purchase. But the main reason remains, not having the choice any more. In a free market as you have pointed out. Eventually customers who need local sync will look for other solutions, with other companies then Apple.

... Pete, you keep on bringing up these options. I have benn following the thread for several month, you and I know very well the there is non equal option, easy and simple to use as local syncing used to be. It's no big help keeping mentioning it. They are not the solutions we are looking for. We want easy simple, local and not with a lot of configuring or software programming. I have tried all of the solutions. From Baikal to Apple Server to ownCloud, it all is problematic! SyncMate might become a good solution.

It has been discussed before why Apple removed local syncing. Basically, it was frequently unreliable, proprietary, and was not scalable for multiple devices/computers (which many of us have these days). Technology and the way we use it does not stand still.

You do not "get talked in" to buying more storage. It is entirely optional. If you don't want it back up to iCloud (by far the biggest usage of storage) you don't have to. There is nothing else available to purchase in iCloud, so no chance of you paying for anything else.

Have you been asleep the last few days? Another third-party local sync solution has become available in beta form. Try it out.

No other mobile OS offers native local USB syncing either. Some third-party devs offer it, and some other phone manufacturers offer their own local sync software with their Android devices - all with varying degrees of functionality and reliability. So when you start looking for other solutions, you'll quickly find it's not so simple elsewhere either.

Local sync was unreliable????????

That is rubbish, in my experience, - I used it on 4 macs - all different spec, all different OSX, all different models, plus iPhone 3, iPhone 3g, iPhone 3gs, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s - no problems, for many years no problems- NONE in syncing. No overlaps, no duplications, no losses of data, simple to use - everything in fact that Baikal, OSX Server are not.

You are right about the 3rd party option - thank god someone (Syncmate) have make the beta to get people on this thread (who don't want iCloud or anything similar) back on track and into a simple system.
