How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Thank you so much for that. 🙂

I no longer have to put up with such nonsensical comments like those you are foolishly making.

Then don't give them your information. iCloud is a choice.

No, it isn't. Apple removed any way for me to sync my contacts, notes and calendars with my iDevices. All my information has to be copied by handbetween my devices and the only data to/from my computer is apps and media.

Bye bye 🙂

Really? You must've known him well I presume?

Fact is, the deprecation of SyncServices was planned (and then executed) long before Steve's death, so it's unlikely he was not aware of it, but actually authorised it.

For all we know (due to Apple's secrecy) Apple may have been planning to retain local USB syncing all along. It might just not have been ready for the initial release of Mavericks. My guess is that instead of USB syncing being dependent on a deprecated OS X system framework, they've updated and moved the specific functionality into iTunes itself (same as on Windows). It's very unlikely they have suddenly re-instated the old SyncServices framework a few months after removing it, and 2 years after first deprecating it. Development plans don't change that quickly.

The concept that Apple did this deliberately is a ridiculous idea.

They have annoyed their own users enough to complain publicly.

Now Apple have once again 'Sherlocked' developers.

How do you think Eltima & the other developers feel now that Apple has just made the software they have been working on for months a part of the OS?

This situation is a mess and to claim it was by design is laughable.

If Apple was as devious as you insinuate, why didn't they simply partner with any 3rd party sync developers last year to assist them making a solution for 10.9 when it was released?

The users would have a sync solution and developers could be confident that thier work wasn't going to be made worthless by Apple.

When you think it through, it just doesn't add up, doesn't the recent gotofail SSL/TLS issue give you a clear picture on Apples level of competence at the moment?

I'm not sure that they completely removed local sync.

The only local storage of that data is the device backup.

I'm not sure if we're crossing wires. You can use OSX Server to sync contact and Calendars. This means it can still be local.

Oh and the trolls are very well fed around here. That's why they have so much energy to try and rile people.

Hardly. You're obviously not at all familiar with Apple's recent history.

The latest iWorks Mac application "upgrades" that Apple released after Mavericks came out were lacking dozens of features users relied on, and although some have been added back, they still haven't re-implemented all of them.

Or the Final Cut Pro X release. Again, Apple released it lacking many features the previous version had, and only started slowly re-adding back some of those lost features in subsequent releases.

So, it's not like Apple hasn't released software lacking previous features before, only to add them back later.

If Apple was as devious as you insinuate,

I never suggested they were "devious". I simply said maybe the replacement for SyncServices (already deprecated 2 years ago), wasn't ready to be included in the initial release of Mavericks. If the local sync feature was planned to return (but in a different form), that could explain why Apple never made a big deal about its removal.

But since Apple rarely reveals their plans, or the reasoning behind their decisions, we'll probably never know.

How would I know? Perhaps no third-party developers had a workable solution back then? Eltima have only just come out with a beta FIVE months later.

Quite possible. I think most people would choose a native solution over 3rd party given similar functionality/reliability. A shame for Syncmate though.

So looks like I might be joining the Mavericks crew after all!

To answer my own post. I as you all knows I use OSX server but I like SyncMate and if it had Notes in it I would stick with SyncMate. I have not found a soulation that sync's Notes like(as easy) as the older OSX. So I am sorry to say that if not for anything else I'll use the Mavericks system (if it do's come back) for Notes.

I would. Though running the server is nice too for syncing between multiple devices, all the benefits of iCloud minus the privacy and security concerns. At least we'll have a choice again 🙂

Edit: Added to quote so it's more clear which post I replied to.

Yes running a server is nice but not for evey one, as the admin and troubleshooting can need a little technal insight esp in networking.

Hey snozdop, I've disagreed with you elsewhere, so thought I'd chime in here that I'm with you on this part. I also think it's likely local syncing simply wasn't ready when Apple wanted to release Mavericks publicly.

What's odd to me is how Apple did it - no interim alternative and no public communication. That's a notable contrast not just to older choices over the company's history but even to other contemporary Mavericks issues like iWork.

But of course, we'll never know what actually happened... 🙂
