How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

The instructions above are correct ones. I am stumped why the restore screen does not show any of your TM backups. I wonder if you ever deleted any of the older backups manually … still, the TM should detect incomplete incremental backups and do the entire HD again. Strange things can happen if you mess with older OSX backups after upgrade to new OSX, but it should show you the new OSX backups at least … scratching my head.

The other route … format HD, install fresh OSX, restore/install all apps, and restore your personal data … is another way to get back to Mountain Lion, albeit more cumbersome and you will not able to find/restore all user settings.

DO A MANUAL BACKUP OF YOUR PERSONAL DATA TO EXTERNAL DRIVE OR USB STICK BEFORE PROCEEDING.

***?!? After iOS 7 I thought about buying an Android phone (there is no differnence anymore. Same ****...) and now this...

This is no option for me! I don't want to use iCloud for anything! Espeically not for calender and contacts. This is very sensitive data that does not belong in the hands of a big US company!

OK. Back to BSD on my Laptop... 😟

Only real choice is NOT to upgrade, I've also skipped the latest version of ITunes, sadly the Mavericks release

appears to fix the Wifi problems on the newest Macbook Air 2013 which I have, was really looking forward to the

update for this alone.. oh well, Apple please bring the info tab back the way it was, and all will be well. I want to synch my devices locally !

And now this on zdnet:

From Russian security researcher Vladimir Katalov

Katalov told ZDNet he was shocked to discover that in addition to all of these (see article) security chain issues, Apple's iCloud data is stored on Microsoft and Amazon servers.

Katalov's presentation pointed out that because Apple provides full request information to its third-party storage providers (Amazon and Microsoft), Apple could provide this data to law enforcement.

Microsoft and Amazons servers have already been hacked by the NSA.

A numbe of people have posted links on how to set up caldav using osx server. I found this link that gives information on all the terminal settings which are not available from the graphic front end:

This link came from Macbidouille.com, a site unfortunately just in French at the moment because they lack the resources to maintain their English translation at Hardmac.com. They are the only Mac related news site that I know (please correct me if you know others) who are highlighting the security issues caused by this change in sync procedure. Being a non US site of Mac enthusiasts, they are taking the same position as 99% of the US and non US posters on this forum.

That's BIG news. This Icloud fiasco is getting worse by the day!

Truly scary to imagine what could be done with all that hacked Amazon, Microsoft and iCloud data together on the same servers.

Can't downgrade easily sadly so I'm going to have to deal with Mavericks on a very short firewall leash for the short term.

Giving apple until their next upgrade package to fix this mess and bring back that little USB cable that worked fine up to now.

If not, those Samsung and Sony tablets and phones are beginning to look like a real option with SL and SyncMate.

My time machine is fine, I can see all the backup when the computer is on, but I cant see anything in it from the restore screen, shows my time machice but shows up empty although it is good. Not sure what is happening.

I need to do it manually but it is close but not all there. after wiping my disk [wish not I just got a different phone] and not being able to do the restore when rebooting I went into my time machine, went to october 20, 2013 and it showed hard drive, i highlighted that, didnt cllick to open and hit restore. The machine works but not with everything. Not sure how to get my time machine to show up when rebooting and holding comand/r and clicking on the TM. Just wont show anthing in it. I tried to seach for that particular situation but I am not sure what to seach for, most just told me to do what I was doing. It appears I have to reload all my programs again?

I have the information but not the program

this sure is turning me off of apple

Nov 3, 2013 10:45 PM in response to handsOFFmydata

it shows up on my screen not problem with everything in it. In the recovery it only allows one choice, which is my time machine. I click on that and the next screen is empty. Oh well

I am trying to do it manually and its working but really time consuming, all to get back my phone sync. If I knew I would have these problems I would have passed on it. Thanks for your help hands. Apple, well you know what I want to say

To add to what handsOFFmydata said:

@RetiredThailand, I have 3 backup/security methods.

A 2 Tb ext desktop HD that is my basic Time Machine backup.

A 1 Tb ext rugged portable drive with with another Time Machine backup - note, Time Machine will alternate

between these two drives each time it runs if both are connected. I carry this drive with me when I am away for a while.

And I keep all my current data, writing, banking, contacts, calendar etc on a thumb drive which I have with me whenever I leave the house, for a walk etc.

I will not trust my materials, files and data to any cloud service for long term storage.

A cloud service, like DropBox, can be handy though if you need to send someone a large file, but I would not leave any file on an external server, delete it as soon as possble.

I hope your recovery of data goes OK, good luck.

I agree with you about apple.com/feedback being a black hole.

So thanks for reposting that petition Eliasor. Sadly apple will pull your post with the link down off this board eventually. Best to post petition links to your social media as well.

The petition to bring back 100% local sync is blowing up!

It should reach it's goal before the end of the year or sooner if people keep signing and reposting!
