How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Hi, this is to everyone really:-

I did a sync via the cloud yesterday and then turned off icloud on my iphone and macbook using the script I posted earlier. iCloud removed the data from my macbook (my script put it back) and I had the option to remove or retain the data on my iPhone (I chose to retain it).

I found today, by logging in to iCloud.com, that the data WAS NOT deleted from the cloud.

There is an option there to reset documents etc. but this only gets all your devices back in sync. I could see no option to delete the cloud data.

I do not want to rely on internet based technology only.

I am frequently on business travels, where I don't have internet access over a longer time (e. g. 3 to 5 days). Therefore I need a possibility of synchronizing my contacts and calendar off-line by an USB cable.

So I hope Apple or any developer will provide a solution for offline-sync. Until then I will not change over to Mavericks, though some of the new features are interesting. But why should I use features I didn't miss until now, but lose a function which is really important for me?

If Apple has announced that the sync services will be omitted one or two years ago, why did no developer prepare a solution before the release of Mavericks? He would make a good bargain at this moment.

So if any one finds a solution for syncing data (not only calendar and contacts) offline via USB cable I would appreciate any hint.

Out of all the 51 pages on this topic, you are the only one who has it the nail on the head!. let's forget about the security and iCloud for the moment and concentrate on the businessman who travels around the world in areas where internet is not readily available, one needs to be able to sync your data, calendars and contacts during this time in an environment where there is no internet. What do we do now? we would also like to keep up to date with the latest available technology when we are in a first world country where there is internet connectivity on a 24/7 basis, do we now need to keep two computers and two telephones for different areas??

Apple, please do not take operating functions away from people before having an alternative solution available.

My concern is not about secuirty, but functionality. I have a device (my car) that talks to my iPhone via bluetooth. The car likes to load up my contacts from my phone via bluetooth. I learned long ago that my car can't handle all of my contacts. So, I put a group together just for the iPhone which is a subset of my contacts. I used iTunes to sync just the group to the iPhone and not the entire contacts database.

I'm not worried about secuirty, I just want the control back. I want to be able to select which contacts get synced to my iPhone. If there is a way to do that with iCloud, then fine. Just tell me how. But I don't think there is. Apple has managed to remove functionality with no replacement. Unclear thinking, at best.

Probably because the number of people who either actually believe they actually need this functionality is so small that it wasn't worth the effort on the part of the developers.

You have NOT read past 50 pages carefully … 😉

Myself, and many others who voice their concerns here, are in the same boat. Forget legalities, the cloud, any cloud, does not physically work for many people in many circumstances … period. So we are just trying to get around the roadblock with minimal detour ...

None of which changes the fact that this is NOT a forum for whining about your paranoia or other reasons for refusing to use a cloud service.

I have come to appreciate that if I want to sync my desktop diary with my iPhone and not miss any client appointments ( or my kids parties) now that I've installed Mavericks, I will have to use iCloud.

I'm not bothered about who knows the content of my calendar as I have nothing worth hiding.

However, I have discovered that some appointments that wee created on my iPhone before I converted to Mac from PC a week ago do not sync with iCloud no matter what I do.

Spent best part of an hour on phone to Apple Support talking to a very sensible and helpful (possibly Norwegian) member of the Apple team and he was stumped. Has elevated it to the Engineering team.

So, it's alright Apple removing local sync but it might have been sensible of them to thoroughly test the integrity of the only Apple alternative first!

I live in a country where internet is not available everywhere. I cannot sync with iCloud all the time and I use my macbook pro and iphone a lot for work. I have always used the cable to sync and found it worked most fine. Suddenly I no longer have a back up on my mac as the sync function via cable is no longer supported by iTunes.

Apple seriously needs to address this as it is not a question of whether we should all be forced to use iCloud or not or whether we want to or not. The problem here is that there are 1000's of users that DO NOT have the option to use only iCloud for whatever reason!!!!

This is the crux of the problem.

This stinks and I am seriously unhappy with this unthoughtful move!

When the world has entered into an age where there is readily available internet access everywhere on the globe we can have this as an option but to date there are many places that are not covered by internet so we need to have a manual option still.

APPLE WAKE UP AND LISTEN TO YOUR USERS!!!

Now if anyone can point me directly where to write an official complaint to apple I will do so.

Thank you!
