MacBook Freezes every few min... What to do? HELP!

I have a late 2008 MacBook that recently (a week ago) started to get every 5 min or so a long (30sec-2min) freeze - rotating beach-ball appearing, and application not responding, Until finally it is released, I can work for another few minutes, till this happens again. Altogether more than 50% of the time I am on hold.

Of course it is impossible to work this way.

These freezes happen even if there is no application running, if there is one application (apple app. like Mail, or ITunes, or TextEdit, non apple app. like Firefox, Word), and of course if there are more apps running.

Things I checked and did (and didn't help):

0. Booting up takes 5min until I can start working. less than 1min for passing gray and blue screen, showing the desktop screen image, but without desktop items (less than 10 items). Another 4min of alternating beach-ball till shows all icons, items, and get response for pad click.


1. Reboot (many times, inc. HARD reboot with the on/off button)


2. Reset SMC


3. HDD Issues:

* 640 GB, 72GB available (may this be a problem?)

In Disk Utility ran "Verify Disk" - All ok

Verified Disk Permissions and Repaired - ok.

S.M.A.R.T - verified


4. System Memory:

4GB (replaced from original 2GB about half a year ago, no issues so far)

In Activity monitor - at least 2GB are free.

No or very few "Page outs" (500KB within 2 days)


5. CPU -

Usually very low (80-90% idle) but interesting observation:

a. WHEN MACBOOK FREEZES, ACTIVITY MONITOR LIST OF PROCESSES SHOWS IN RED APPLICATION (E.G. TEXTEDIT) NOT RESPONDING, AND OF COURSE DOES NOT UPDATE, BUT WHEN IT RECOVERS AND THE APP IS RESPONDING AGAIN I SEE THE MDS PROCESS TAKING 90-100% CPU FOR 1-2 SNAPSHOTS, THEN GOES DOWN TO 0%.


b. There seems to be a "kernel task" running, taking 300MB real mem, 1.7GB virtual mem.and about 2% CPU.


May this be a spotlight/indexing issue? mds gone wild?

is it related to a low (~10%) HDD space?

What can I do to resolve it?

HELP...

How much free space on the startup disk?


Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your desktop then click Get Info.


You'll see Avaiable & Capacity


Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can cause the issues you are describing.



/Applications/launch2net - Sony Ericsson Edition/launch2net - Sony Ericsson

That could also be causing the freezing.


Try removing the de.novamedia.NML2NDeviceObserver.plist mentioned here > Orphaned networking application??: Apple Support Communities

re. HDD - 83GB free out of 640GB, I can try to free some more, but... will the extra 10G make the difference?


re. deamons/agents -

in Library/ there is only a folder called "LaunchAgents" inside there is no NML2N reference.

Only files there are:

com.adobe.AAM.Updater-1.0.plist

com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist

com.apple.FolderActions.folders.plist

com.google.keystone.agent.plist

Should I trash them all?


Also found a folder "Library/Frameworks/NML2NManager.framework" (this seems to be the only place on the HDD where there is anything with NML2N).. should I get rid of it? how?

Here are some updates:

What I did:

1. I freed some space in the HDD (now 100GB free out of 640GB).

2. Indeed found Library/LaunchDaemons/ where I found and could erase some of the .plist files that where remained from removed apps (originally I looked in ~user/Library rather than in /Library/ ... so I couldn't find it..)


Things seem much better. Thanks.

Still wondering 2 things:

1. Hey, if I buy a 640GB HDD, does this mean I can use only 540GB? this is a bit strange no?

2. Still I get some messages in the console (see below). related to "DisplayLink". What is it? Is there anything I can do to remove/resolve this?
