Pondini's Time Machine

Now that James Pond (Pondini) is no longer with us, I was wondering what was to come of the vast amount of knowledge at http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html

Is there anyone in the ASC in line to inherit, so to speak, the site.

Is there a way to save all the info, other than creating dozens, if not more, PDF files comprised of all the different pages.

Just curious if anyone had any thoughts or knowledge about this.

Or just move to 10.10, then 10.11, etc. 10.1 went up to 10.1.15 before moving to 10.2. Besides, not too many animal species with which to associate OS X unless we are moving on to Surfing sites. 😁

No doubt Apple will hire expensive consultants to come up the major name change when it occurs. What puzzles me is if all future major versions will be free upgrades. Doing it more than once means it's a tradition. So far it's just a nice gesture.

Pondini's site might be worthless if Apple does away with Time Machine.

I forgot about 10.10, etc. I don't like that though. I think a single digit after 10 looks cleaner. But we will see.

The free OS is certainly Apple's way of trying to stay ahead of the competition and also to give a compelling reason to buy hardware.. They may continue to give away the OS and then charge for the add-ons like iLife, iWork and the Pro Apps.

I like Time Machine. I use it and have utilized what's it's for on many occasions. But it's a very complicated piece of software. I've needed to do a full reset on several, if not more, occasions. But if that does not work, I usually opt for reformatting and and starting anew.

Joe

Firstly, I have to say that we owe a debt of gratitude to Jim for stepping in where Apple chose not to tread. Despite being a busy, prolific contributor to this and other user communities, he would take the time to pen personal emails. I'll miss his warmth.

As for saving the information in Jim's site, there is an app on the Mac App Store called "Site Sucker". https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sitesucker/id442168834?mt=12

Site Sucker can download an entire website to your Mac in a "localized" form which allows it to be fully functional on your Mac. Localization replaces original website links with links to the file locations on your Mac.

All 40-odd megabytes of Jim's work in pondini.org is backed up on my Mac and, most appropriately, is further preserved by Time Machine.

Thank you Jim. You made a huge difference.

When the time comes, I'd like to offer what help I can with that site, whether it be financial, labor, or my expertise with Time Machine, limited though it is compared to Mr. Pond's.

I was about to contact his relatives about the domain expiration until I was told that it had been renewed. As you're ready in contact with the relatives, it probably makes sense for you to continue to be the contact as long as you're willing.

Regarding that person who wanted to buy pondini.org, I wonder what his plans for it were? I can imagine it having ads. I'm not sure what I think about that possibility.

I can't find a reference to it right now, but Tim Cook announced somewhere public (during the Oct 22 event, maybe?) that all future OS X upgrades would be free.

Back to the main part of this topic, I want to say again how shocked & saddened I was by the loss of Jim Pond. Like so many others, I never met him in person but only a month or so before he died we were emailing each other regularly about a simple Applescript I devised & he improved to check for the Time Machine bug he discovered in the OS X 10.8 version.

At that time, he gave me no indication that he was terminally ill. He bought a lengthy book about AppleScript for this & mentioned that he intended to study it at length in the future, so it is possible this was a sudden & unexpected illness. I hope this is true & he & his family were spared the suffering of a long & drawn out illness. If anyone on the planet deserved to be spared that, it was Jim -- as others have said, he was always willing to take the time to help so many of us with our Time Machine questions & problems; always a gentleman; always respectful of others.

Kappy: if it seems appropriate to you & you have the opportunity to mention it to Jim's son, please let him know that no matter what becomes of the site, we will forever be grateful for his help.

We have two years to hear from Jim's heirs about how they will choose to dispose of the site. Apparently, there is at least one person who wanted to buy the site from Jim, but he turned them down.

When the time comes, I was able to find someone well known to the Mac community willing to re-host the site if it comes to that. Not the maintenance, so that would still be up to someone here.

As I said, I've located a well known member of the Apple community who is willing to host the site, if necessary, but never heard back from the estate.

We've had some discussions in other forums about finding somebody to update it, but have not heard of anybody stepping forward. I'm not at all sure there is anybody today that is up-to-date enough on the subject, so it would probably take someone quite a bit of effort to get up to speed.

Some good news on the pondini.org front. The domain name was renewed sometime in the last 10 days and now expires in November 2018.

Rather than someone taking over the site, perhaps someone can develop a companion site that refers back to pondini.org. Mr. Pond had a distinct writing style and method to impart knowledge, and leaving that intact is a nice legacy to his assistance to the Apple community.
