Pondini's Time Machine

Now that James Pond (Pondini) is no longer with us, I was wondering what was to come of the vast amount of knowledge at http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html

Is there anyone in the ASC in line to inherit, so to speak, the site.

Is there a way to save all the info, other than creating dozens, if not more, PDF files comprised of all the different pages.

Just curious if anyone had any thoughts or knowledge about this.

Hey Kappy,

I wanted to check if there had been any further developments regarding getting the content from pondini.org hosted elsewhere? The site seems to be loading blank pages that only contain references to what appears to be a godaddy parking url

It is being explored. i've contacted the family, but the disposition of the site is far down on the list of things to be addressed in probating the estate.

For now the site should remain functioning.

Thank you Kappy. It would be great if someone like yourself could eventually take it over. Please encourage the family to keep it online in the mean time.

Congratulations on going over the 200,000 point mark. That's quite an accomplishment.

Thank you, Joe.

i have left my contact information with Jim's son and asked that he get in touch whenever they are ready to consider what to do with the site. This may take a while so we will have to just bide our time. I explained that we would like to keep the site running, and find someone willing to maintain it and provide the missing expertise now that Jim has died. Not sure who has the expertise with Time Machine and Time Capsule that Jim had, but I'm sure we can find one when the time comes.

I've been emotional all day after finding out James died. I only knew him (knew of him) thru the Support Community, but he was such a big part of it, you have the sense you know him better than you really do.

Thank you for the update and please keep the Community informed of any major changes to pondini.org

In another Discussion R.I.P. James Pond Kiraly, on page two, mentioned that Pondini's Domain Expires in 4 days. Any word on what will happen to the site.

Joe,

Jim's son told me the renewel for the site had been paid, so the site should still be active after today. That's all that I know at this point. I think the site will be up until after the estate is probated unless it's very complicated. Until then it's up to the son to decide the fate of Pondini.org. I'm hoping when they get to dealing with it they will accept my suggestion to allow someone from the forums to take over updating and managing the site.

I was pretty sure the domain was renewed. I did not the exact date information. We have two years to hear from Jim's heirs about how they will choose to dispose of the site. Apparently, there is at least one person who wanted to buy the site from Jim, but he turned them down. Maybe that same person will make an offer to the estate.

When you said two years for some reason it made me wonder where OS X will be in two years. We're at 10.9 now and theoretically there will be two major updates in that time. We will have to move out of the "X" era????

Or just move to 10.10, then 10.11, etc. 10.1 went up to 10.1.15 before moving to 10.2. Besides, not too many animal species with which to associate OS X unless we are moving on to Surfing sites. 😁

No doubt Apple will hire expensive consultants to come up the major name change when it occurs. What puzzles me is if all future major versions will be free upgrades. Doing it more than once means it's a tradition. So far it's just a nice gesture.

Pondini's site might be worthless if Apple does away with Time Machine.

I forgot about 10.10, etc. I don't like that though. I think a single digit after 10 looks cleaner. But we will see.

The free OS is certainly Apple's way of trying to stay ahead of the competition and also to give a compelling reason to buy hardware.. They may continue to give away the OS and then charge for the add-ons like iLife, iWork and the Pro Apps.

I like Time Machine. I use it and have utilized what's it's for on many occasions. But it's a very complicated piece of software. I've needed to do a full reset on several, if not more, occasions. But if that does not work, I usually opt for reformatting and and starting anew.

Firstly, I have to say that we owe a debt of gratitude to Jim for stepping in where Apple chose not to tread. Despite being a busy, prolific contributor to this and other user communities, he would take the time to pen personal emails. I'll miss his warmth.

As for saving the information in Jim's site, there is an app on the Mac App Store called "Site Sucker". https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sitesucker/id442168834?mt=12

Site Sucker can download an entire website to your Mac in a "localized" form which allows it to be fully functional on your Mac. Localization replaces original website links with links to the file locations on your Mac.

All 40-odd megabytes of Jim's work in pondini.org is backed up on my Mac and, most appropriately, is further preserved by Time Machine.
