iWork '09 Retail CD - Upgrade to latest version?

I bought iWork '09 through the retail CD. I just upgraded to Mavericks and of course I would like to update to the latest version of iWork without paying for new versions of each app through the app store. Is Apple going to offer us an upgrade path? Those of us who bought the retail version are in a bit of a limbo as to what to do.

I know that - that's not the question. Sorry, I probably didn't write it clearly. This is as much a request to Apple as it is a question - those of us who bought the retail DVD would like to know if we're going to get a free upgrade through the app store as we did for minor updates to iWork or if we should go ahead and spend around sixty dollars buying all new versions. Are we going to get an upgrade path?

Unofficially, it looks like we have to buy them

Not quite. According to the Apple press release the upgrade to existing users who have upgraded to Mavericks, is free.

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2013/10/23Apple-Introduces-Next-Generation-iWork -and-iLife-Apps-for-OS-X-and-iOS.html

It states:

Pricing & Availability

iWork and iLife for Mac come free with every new Mac purchase. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠. iWork and iLife for iOS are available for free from the App Store℠

I've called Tech Support and they tried to tell me that I would have to purchase them. When I kept on quoting to them their own Press Release, they said they would have to do more research and get back to me.

So I suggest you call them and complain. The more people that call them the more attention this is going to receive. It should make no difference how an "existing user" purchased the iWorks apps, whether through the App Store or through a CD.

There are several different threads on this issue already on the support forums. For example, take a look at:

You might be shocked... If there's one thing I've noted about Apple in 20 years of using their products it's that they go above and beyond to make customers happy when their request is reasonable. Having DVD purchasers be treated equally to MAS purchasers is certainly reasonable. But in all honesty it's their perogative either way - it's not like this is a huge amount of money... which is exactly why I'm surprised they're being so clenched fist about it.

I don't mean I'll be shocked because Apple is a bunch of tight wads, shocked (or better, surprised) if they bother with having the MAS recognized the installs. Frankly, I've had iWork 4 years, I don't mind paying. God knows how much I've spent on Office in 4 years.

Also, I am thinking I will use iCloud iWorks on my MBP and update the iOS apps. I don't do anything sophisticated with either Numbers or Pages and this should suffice. At least until I upgrade to a new MB in the future 🙂

Well based on this article at Macworld, it's a bug that's being worked out at Apple and we will get the updates...

"Macworld spoke with an Apple spokesperson who noted that there’s currently an issue with some legacy customers, and the company is working on a fix."

According to that same article we're supposed to see a button in Purchased to claim the apps, but I'm not seeing it:

If you own iLife '11 or iWork ’09 apps for the Mac but did not purchase them from the Mac App Store: You should be able to download the latest versions for free by going to the Mac App Store and tapping Update, though you may need to first visit the Purchases screen, where you might see a box called “You Have [number] Apps to Accept.” This ties apps you have on your computer to both your Apple ID and a hardware identifier on your computer, and it should allow you to download free updates to these programs from any computer associated with your Apple ID.
