How can I downgrade Safari 6.1 to 6.0.5?

I'm using Mountain Lion (10.8.5) on my MacBook Pro.

Today, I saw I have one update on my App Store and it was for Safari, so I updated it without thinking.

Now I hate how it looks on TopSites, History, and Bookmark.

I want to go back to Safari 6.0.5

Does anyone know how I can go back to the previous one?

Thank you.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

umm, sorry but reinstalling the entire OS just for 1 app is not at all so simple and will most likely create a lot of headaches for you. google "safari 6.05 download" and try this link: https://www.macupdate.com/app/iphone/15675/apple-safari

then use Pacifist to downgrade to the older version: http://www.macworld.com/article/1161367/revert_Safari.html

just ignore the version #s for this article. i've used Pacifist a couple times to downgrade to older versions of Safari. this isn't the first time Apple has made the newer versions less functional and more buggy...

I spouted off to Apple about the way Safari 6.1 looks and acts. Okay, spouted too fast. Really simple to go back to the LOOK of 6.0.5....but not to 6.0.5. Open Safari. Open Preferences. Click on General. Set Safari to open in your Homepage. Mine is just https://google.com. My default Search Engine is set to Google. Set New Windows Open With and also New Tabs Open With Homepage. (Or whatever page you wish.) After you open Safari (again mine opens in Google) to get rid of the sidebar with Bookmarks, click on View in the Toolbar. Then click on Hide Bookmarks Side Bar. Poof, its gone and you now have your browser open in full screen view. Apple seems to always set defaults in a way that upsets the most users!

this actually wasn't required for me when i updated to 6.1 as all these prefs retained from the previous version. unfortunately, making the bookmarks disappear doesn't change the fact that they removed the much more functional and more highly advanced Bookmarks Manager that allowed you to organize, edit, search far more effectively & efficiently than the severely limited, amateur Sidebar that is totally useless if you have 1000s of Bookmarks. Bookmarks Manager let you access Collections (history, bookmarks bar, boomarks menu) & all Bookmark folders in 1 window with a sub-windowpane for each folder that let you see/edit/search all bookmarks within each folder as well as a rotating quickview for each bookmark.

apple continues to remove essential OS & app features and dumb down general functionality.

Thank you so much! I did exactly as you said and hit command R when my computer was starting up. It took about 45 minutes to install. Once everything installed, it restarted my computer and my Safari 6.0.5 was back. I didn't lose anything either. Plus, as an added bonus my computer is about 90% faster. I can't believe it. The latest Safari update was a nightmare for me.

Thank you! I am running Lion on an older Macbook and the Reading List in 6.1 just plain doesn't work. It was the only reason I bought Lion in the first place.

I got 6.0.5 and Pacifist from your links and the reinstallation seems to have worked, despite the fact that the Finder wouldn't let me trash 6.1. It still shows Safari as being version 6.1, but About Safari shows 6.0.5. Good enough for me.

glad to hear. i guess the article didn't specify you need to "get info" on Safari 6.1, unlock the file (bottom-right lock icon), edit the 'sharing & permissions" and set all the names to "read & write" access. then you should be able to trash it. it's probably b/c when that article was written, that older version of safari was able to be trashed without needing to edit the file permissions.

also, with the newer version of Pacifist, when installing the older 6.05 Safari version, you will need to select "Replace" for the initial files (check the box that applies the choice to all files), then "Update" when you are given the option in the next pop-up window (and again click the checkbox) as the article suggests.

where does it say Safari is still 6.1?

THANK YOU !!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!

I've been fighting with Safari 6.1 and Java since I upgraded to it.

I'd tried everything, including re-installing Java at least 6 million times!

This fixed the problem. MacBook Pro OS 10.8.5 now Safari 6.0.5 YEA!!!!

I posted these instructions on Pogo.com as well, so all those who haven't been

able to play any Java games, can, as soon as they go back to 6.0.5.

Suggest everyone send feedback on Safari 6.1 to Apple. Used Macs for over 25 yrs.

Never had so many problems as I have in the past month or so. This is not the Apple

I'd come to know and love.

I think they should ignore all the newbies and do things like they used to.

New interfaces are awful, choices/options need to be restored and get rid of that stupid

side bar!

(1) Open application folder in Finder . Right click on Safari, choose Show Contents.
(2) Open Terminal, execute commands

sudo rm -rf Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.* sudo rm -rf /System/Library/StagedFrameworks/Safari

(3) Download Safari 6.0.5 (https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15675/apple-safari) , and install it

Restart your computer as best.

The new navigation in history and bookmarks is really bad, it is the archaic mode? That's the new ergonomics of Apple products? Cover Flow was ultimately very practical. Instead of trying to improve it, Apple has just removed it. Apple continues to dumb down general functionality.

Is there an alternative to Cover Flow in Safari?

Meanwhile, I downgrade to Safari 6.0.5.

How can I downgrade Safari 6.1 to 6.0.5?
