iPhoto 9.5 dropped Mac-to-Mac sharing?

I just installed the latest OSX Mavericks update and iPhoto '11 9.5 and it appears that the old Mac-to-Mac sharing is gone! I don't see a Sharing tab on Preferences any more and none of our other Macs running iPhoto are listed in the sidebar.

If it's really gone, I wonder what Apple expects people to use instead? iCloud doesn't do the job because it's only the last 1000 photos (at best), so you can't see old photos.

Terence,

I've read quite a few of your posts and hints for iPhoto and using it as it's designed and intended capabilities and they're excellent, really helpful and I'm sure there will be many people benefitting from your advice that you'll never hear from.

However, you're always going to get a disgruntled 'we' when a feature is removed that functioned perfectly well for many people, and forums like this are a perfect place for sharing those frustrations.

I just thought I'd say that people like yourself have been invaluable to me over the years helping ordinary people with solutions to problems. But while you use an application to its designed use, I wouldn't get too involved with those of us who are just annoyed at a lost feature. It seems people helping with iPhoto are getting a hard time on here, but it is greatly appreciated even if I just want home sharing back!

Sorry, but I am wondering if this thread has not been hijacked by people missing the original point. This never had squat to do with Network storage on a local LAN or Cloud - it was about Apple unilaterally discontinuing what had been a good and easy feature of iPhoto.

Apple iPhoto had provided users with the easy capability to share images (and the data/edits saved with each image) between one another, either connected through a LAN or by a direct cable (Mac to Mac). This was simple, I could edit photos to look better then share them with others in my family who did not know anything about Shadows and Highlights or Color Correction. iPhoto picture sharing did not require Internet access, it did not have a thing to do with keeping iPhoto anywhere other than on your own Mac and sharing photos at will with others. This worked for many of us who are not ‘tech savvy’, and it allowed us (families for example) to share while not having their personal data stored on some stranger’s Network Drive (Cloud, etc.).

I came to realize there was a problem after I upgraded, could not figure out how to share photos like we used to. I will never forget my visit to an Apple store to ask a Genius, and he was so bubbly and excited at how “Apple has made it easier than ever for families to share” - I still have not figured out the Cloud and I doubt my Grandparents will in this lifetime. Many families do not want their six or eight year old having to deal with Internet access and the Cloud.

Apple essentially has become the Big Brother of the 1984 commercial. They dictate what they will give and what they will take away. They took something good away even without the courtesy of warning us about what we risked losing by upgrading to that newer version of iPhoto that took away home file sharing. I wonder if Apple remains so obsessed with themselves, knowing better than their customers what we want, that they would do this to force users onto the Cloud to make even more money (yeah with the please provide your credit card proviso)? I nor my family use the Cloud, nor do we understand the Cloud - but we did understand local iPhoto picture sharing.

Sorry, but I think we need someone else to start a new computer company “for the rest of us”. Has “Pear Computer, Inc.” been registered?

Martin,

I don't think it has been hijacked by anyone. There are those of us that are completely perplexed like you that an important and valued feature like home sharing has disappeared, and quite frankly are disappointed and angry about it. Certainly no caveat from Apple that says 'before you upgrade note that home sharing is no longer a feature of iPhoto'.

There are then those people that are constructively suggesting, or testing work arounds that at least attempt to match that lost feature, whether through keeping the library on a networked drive, or using other software - I think that is a natural consequence of discussing the lost feature.

There are plenty of people on here sharing the views in your post, but the thread has little worth if all it contains is people complaining about a lost feature. To be honest, no matter how angry or frustrated people are, those that are offering solutions and advice should be welcomed, even if we'd like to kick 'The Man' in the backside.
