Any way to make the Dock transparent or black again?

There seems to be no way to adjust the Dock background in Mavericks so that it is transparent or black as it was on Mountain Lion.

I saw this discussed on MacRumors about the developers' version of Mavericks--no solutions there.

Dockmod and other apps are no solution.

There is no easy way to change the look of the maverick dock like in previous OSX versions. Dockmod and similar apps are system hacks that can cause system errors. They should not be used on productive systems.

It is horrible that apple ignores the complaints about the dock and offer no solution. The new iOS7 look is similar horrible with its low contrast look. I have lost my confidence in the apple designers.

I was using cDock for quite a while, with gratitude, and then recently updated Safari and iTunes from Apple's software update. Those updates apparently voided cDock's function and the frosty background to the dock has returned.

I've downloaded and installed the most recent cDock version 8.2, yet when I change the dock theme to "Transparent" or to "Custom" with 0 in the alpha setting, there's no change. In fact, there's no change when I select any option in the dock theme menu.

There's a checkbox (currently unchecked) in cDock info for "open in 32-bit mode." Would checking that box help?
