iWork purchased on disc in 2011. Why can't I upgrade free?

I bought iWork on disc at BestBuy with my MBP in 2011. But when I click on Pages, Numbers or Keynote in the App store I get the message, "Pages 4.3 is already installed but was not purchased on the App store. Would you like to purchase? $19.99"

Why can't I upgrade? I did buy it, but at the time it was not even AVAILABLE in the app store.

OS X Mavericks (10.9)

The newest device that I have is my iPhone 5S that is now exactly 30 days old. I bought it on the 22nd of September. That has nothing to do with this upgrade though. but I did get the free iWorks and iLife apps on that and subsequently was able to download them to my iPad as well. 🙂

I read your post in the WC and I know that you are not feeling well. I'm sorry, I don't want to make your pain any worse that it is.

You are, as far as I know, the Mac App Store guru so I assumed that you would have this knowledge and the discussion in the WC where I read your post talked about this as well. I didn't see the keynote either.

If you read the press release it sure makes it sound like as long as you have purchased the iWorks apps, you are entitled to the freebies! And the press release calls it an update as well.

I have to agree with Dahveed - retail DVD versions went out of "favor" when MAS was introduced and Apple expects everyone to be running MAS versions more than 2 years after the introduction of MAS.

The problem: retail DVD versions and MAS versions are two separate entities. And, as DVD versions are not recognized by MAS or listed there, logically there can't be any updates.

My take is that Apple has now officially discontinued support of the iWork 09 retail version and switched to MAS only support (including updates).

I understand what is going on, but it blows, IMO. I paid for iWorks two years ago and the press release sure as h*e*l*l makes it sound like it's a free update - especially since the word "update" is used, not "upgrade". I just wanted to p*i*s*s and moan about it for a while. 😉

My DVD versions of the iWorks apps were being updated up until this release as well. Once again, just my opinion, but If Apple had their way, they would force users to upgrade at a price every six months.

I think that problem here is only with Mac App Store itself - where my purchase not registered.

I have the same iWork disc version (bought from Amazon), i entered the serial number which comes with it, but in the Mac App Store i don't see this product in all my Purchases (click the tab "purchases") - Mac App Store counting only apps which purchased through it - disc version not registered there and i don't know how to process this product through the store, hope that new OS upgrade maybe recognize the purchased installed iWork on my Mac, but i'm not decided yet to upgrade system without prepare.

I'm quite sure that it will not show up in the app store; the DVD versions have quietly been abandoned..

@ Demo..

I will continue to use my iWork 09 - at least for now.
