Swipes in Safari stop working

When using Safari in Mavericks, I can scroll up and down as usual with the 2-finger gestures, but if I try to do a 2-finger "back" swipe to go to the previous page that page freezes (can't scroll at all, no links respond and if try to click on the back/forward button, the page title and URL changes, but the page is still frozen as it was). I can go to another tab and navigate with the arrow keys, but all trackpad gesturing within Safari stops working. When I quit and relaunch Safari, all is back to usual. I deleted all Safari extensions, deleted all preference files, deactivated/reactivated the gesture in System Preferences and still acts the same. Any thoughts?

Just for good measure:

Solutions which do not actually help - except that rebooting helps in general:

-Resetting PRAM

-Rebooting

Solutions that specifically help against stuck gestures etc.:

-Sleeping and waking up again

-Turning on and off screen via Ctrl+Shift+Eject/Power-Button (http://apple.stackexchange.com/a/75510) - might be better than sleeping because it does not seem to disrupt networking

I had this same problem and resetting PRAM or SMC didn't work for me. What did end up working was maybe a little bit "scorched earth", but someone who's tried everything and can't get it to work may find it useful.

After a couple of trips to the apple genius bar, I realized I should try swiping on my guest account. When I did that, it worked perfectly. I had already disabled and deleted BTT and Air Keyboard, two things I thought may have been messing with it.

The Genius had recommended a clean install of Mavericks, which didn't work. He said it may just have to be restored, although predictably whatever was on there screwing it up before would just do it again. So what ended up being the best option was to move files from my Home folder onto an external, delete the user account, and create a new one. Then you just load back all the files, set up iCloud again, and everything should be working fine. This just also means going through and setting all your preferences over again (took me a few hours, and some time here and there with each program when I realized certain preferences had been reset, default window size etc.).

I would say just make sure to deactivate any programs before doing this and making sure you have activation codes. Final Draft needed it again for the new user, but that was really the only one. Photoshop and LR4 were fine.

And also, as your setting up the new user and adding and enabling programs, make sure to check swiping in Safari, so you don't get to the end and realize something along the way messed it up again.

Again, this was a longer process than resetting PRAM or just putting the system to sleep and then waking, but it finally did the trick for me as a Plan Z. And now it's been working flawlessly for the past week with no problems. So if you go into a guest bare bones account, and the swiping is unaffected, then this may be the best solution.

Somebody please help....

I am having this same problem with freezing up as soon as I side swipe my mouse....even a teeny bit.

I am a new iMac user having recently switched over to Macs from PC. We now have all Mac devices....this issue is happening on the iMac, which we only purchased in the past 6-8 mos.

I don't understand what most posters on here are talking about regarding PRAM or various softwares to uninstall.

Can a kind person please provide STEP BY STEP instructions on how to solve this problem? It is extremely frustrating as a person who is not that tech-savvy to begin with.

Thank you!!

See my response above. In case you can't, here:

I had THE EXACT SYMPTOMS. Plus, the 2-finger unpinch to enlarge wasn't working even before everything else stopped working.

This worked for me over 24 hours ago, and all is well now. I think these steps are fairly straight forward. i'm not real technical either.

1. go to system preferences, trackpad

2. uncheck every box in all 3 sections

3. reboot

4. recheck every box

Welcome to Mac World, you won't regret the switch.

You should try this also :

This worked for me; Until now trackpad work fine ...

1 - Preference System > Bluetooth > Check "Show in Menu Bar"

2 - Pop up the bluetooth menu bar (screen's up-right) > Apple wireless Trackpad submenu > Disconnect

3 - (same menu) > Connect (or press the trackpad button on the side)

I just had this problem again after several months without an issue. Suspecting the external track pad again, as per my original post, I turned off bluetooth and then activated it again. Swipes in Safari still didn't work. So I did the following:-

1. Turned off bluetooth

2. Restarted my Mac.

3. Turned on bluetooth again.

Swipes now work again in Safari.
