The new GarageBand 10.0.0 - First Impressions

Just download the new GarageBand 10.0.0 and it is different, way different. I browsed through for a few minutes and here is what I noticed (maybe it is still there but hidden)

This is not an upgrade of GarageBand, this is a new app, exactly Logic, just a stripped down version.

No more Magic GarageBand

No more Podcast Track

No more Movie Tracks (at least limited)

No more send Movie to iWeb or iDVD (the writing was on the wall)

No More Inspector (New Smart Controls, from Logic)

No More Master Echo/Reverb (can't find it???)

New GUI (exactly like Logic)

New Smart Controls (from Logic)

New Drummer (from Logic)

New Library (from Logic)

New Quick Help (from Logic)

New Global Tracks (from Logic)

New save to SoundCloud

New beautiful looking AUEffects

New iCloud Sharing

BTW, the version numbering might be confusing. The "old GarageBand" was named "GarageBand 11 v6.0"4 and the new version is just "GarageBand v10.0.0" So what do we call it now? The "New GarageBand" or use its real name "Logic Express X".

Hope that helps

Hello people, the more I deal with garageband 10, I must say it's great but very different! You can continue to give all traces of effects, but there are a lot more and become much better than the old garageband. the cut function is more pleasant and smoother. I produce spots for radio stations, for me it's getting used to, but it has high quality.

Since the new GarageBand does not overwrite the old 6.0 version, you will be able to use either one.

GB 10.0 is a great app if you don't have Logic Pro X and you can't beat the free price. But since I do have LPX, I may end up deleting GB 10.0 and just keeping GB 6.0. I would miss Magic GarageBand. I just do not understand Apple's "logic" here in killing off the old Logic Express and now, arguably, GarageBand, and positioning this new morphed hybrid somewhere between the old GB and Logic. With this version they have eliminated much of the fun factor and no longer seem to be targeting home users/hobbyists/non-musicians/podcasters.

Which would be fine if they called this new version what it really is: Logic Express X, and continued developing GB as GB.

Not sure what all the fuss is about.

You "can" add a movie track and sync to it. Just choose File > Open Movie, Choose a movie file, then click Open. It will be added to GB.

Reverb is still there, its in the amp designer. It comes with not only a "level" knob to control amount, but a pop-up to choose from 10 different types.

The only thing I find sore is the loss of export-to-podcast option. But for the loss of podcasting (and magic garageband that I never used), it gives you so much more. How can you not love arrangement markers, smart controls, AU-plugins, and ofcourse the Drummer Editor?

GarageBand 10 is a LOT more like Logic Pro. I can see a clearer upgrade path now, but in some respects the new GB is going to be too much app for the casual home studio musician.

Don't get me wrong, the Drummer feature alone makes this worth the upgrade, but there are other aspects that are very confusing and strange. My main concern is the seemingly random ability to access amp and effects settings on some tracks and not on others. My MIDI tracks should act the same as the audio tracks, with the added benefit of greater levels of manipulation. I've been frustrated to no end not having direct access to amp settings, reverb, etc. for MIDI instruments like I have with the audio.

For the casual user, this may certainly be frustrating, but it helps to know what the differences between the two are to see why some features are supported on audio tracks, but not MIDI.

MIDI files are basically "instructions", which tell the computer when to generate each tone, in which pitch (frequency), and for how long. An entire series of these makes up a song. Audio tracks, in contrast, are recordings of true sound that occur in the real world. They are made up of tiny "samples", which record all of the frequencies occuring at that particular moment in time.

You can think of this as the difference between vector art (flash) and digital photos. Digital photos are your "audio tracks". Vector art (flash) is a series of instructions, i.e, draw a line from point B to point B. Move point A by x amount. Its much easier to apply "effects" such as blur, sharpen, contrast etc to a digital photo, but much harder to do so for vector art. In the same way, its much easier to apply effects for audio tracks, but much harder for MIDI.

Yes, you can add a movie track, but you cannot add chapter markers and annotions, the movie track cannot do most of the things that the podcast track could do, like embedding a poster frame. There is no way to add stills at all. The Media Browser does not even have an option to add images, only Audio and Movies.

May I say just for the record in Apple servers that it is outrageous that GB 10 did drop support for podcaster with no notice… especially when podcasting is kind of Apple oriented (even if anybody can use it)!

I do'nt see the point of deleting features… I need the chapter and podcast illustration and I won't get another soft for this… so I will probably delete GB10 as good as it might be… what a pity!

Out of curiosity, since podcasting and export-to-iDVD are no longer available, what use would the poster-frame, chapter-markers/annotations, and support for images be?
