Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

That's not a solution... Who said I wanted no sidebar?

I just want a new window when double-clicking a folder, just like it has been during 29.5 years since january 1984! No more, no less.

All things which have been suggested more than once in this topic. None are the solution to the question.

I will do command-shift-N, but I'd say at least 10% of the time, I still accidentally do command-N, in which I have to then do command-W and then command-shift-N (resulting in 3 commands instead of 1).

I created a very minor, sort of workaround for that. In the System Preferences, open the Keyboard settings and click on the Shortcuts tab. Click on App Shortcuts at the bottom.

From here, I was hoping to assign New Finder Window as some other keystroke, and then New Folder as Command+N. However, Mavericks won't let you assign Command+N to New Folder. So click the + button to add a new shortcut, then give it the menu name New Finder Window. Now enter a keystroke you would likely never use from the desktop. I gave it Command+Option+Shift+N.

What happens then when I "accidentally" press Command+N for a new folder, the system just plays the sound for a mistake without opening a Finder window. So there's nothing to close and you just say to yourself, "Oh, yeah." and press Command+Shift+N.

Not really a fix, but eliminates the need to close the Finder window you didn't want in the first place before pressing Command+Shift+N for the new folder you did want.

Do you happen to know if a 3rd-Party solution such as Path Finder might provide a way to restore the old behavior being discussed here?

(PF is one of the apps that was mentioned in the thread discussing how to get back folder/file 'highlighting' in the Finder ... I really really try to avoid apps like that. that get close to changing core system behavior. But if it could do double duty in fixing both these annoying 'improvements' by Mavericks then I might be tempted.)

Interestingly, Path Finder does the absolute opposite.

I never liked that app BECAUSE of its one-window-system.

It doesn't remember individual view settings for folders either.

I switched to Path Finder a couple months ago and love it. Far more options than Finder. Actually made the switch to regain labels on files and folders but found out it's so much more. Haven't looked back...

I don't think so. It's an app that appears to work separately from the OS's Finder.

Extremely frustrating.. I see no reaso to have eliminated this functionality!

Ok, so I just saw an auto-email regarding a reply on this post by "Helgason". I came here to read it and it's not here anymore (must have been removed due to some TOS or something). Needless to say, I read through the post in the email, in which he claimed he wrote a plugin that is easily installed to solve this problem.

Hopefully many people on this board have seen it, because I just tried it myself and it IS A SOLUTION. I now have normal double click and command-O working as it did in early OS X and pre OS X... the original default double click and command-open, and the installation was painless and took under 30 seconds.

Many thanks. As you can see from this long thread, this has been a passionate issue for a lot of people. I can personally say that this is going to return the workflow here to normal and prevent a considerable number of obsentities through the day. It's actually been such a PITA that I've literally held off updating to 10.9 on work machines, so it'll be a fun weekend to get everything up to date.
