As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

I had thought the same. With a few tweak iBooks Author could be a marvelous 'Pages Pro'. However, my fear is of something much more sinister. I fear this is the tip of the iceberg. This is the beginning of a philosophical shift at Apple.

We all remember the '1984' ad that started the Mac revolution, the Orwellian future, the 'Borg-like' one-mind mentality. How the individual triumphed by casting her hammer into Big Brother. Apple staked its claim on empowering the individual and their own creativity against the forces of evil that would turn us all into stone-like lemmings. This IS the DNA the Mac was founded on.

However, with the success of FaceBook, Twitter, Google, the dollar signs are once again pointing toward the Orwellian 'one-mind' future (to say nothing about the growing acceptibility of collecting data and spying). With Jobs gone, Cook and Ive are recharting the new minimalist, future of the 'collective'. This is their vision. It seems to me all the 'individualized' features had to be abandoned to implement the new iOS 'collective' experience - like the new US healthcare problems, the implementation of all these features were approaching a mathematical impossiblity in the face of this new 'collective,' 'collaborative' ideal. So, out they went.... and they can't come back without bloating the program and defying the new minimalist ideal.

I fear this is the end of Apple. The DNA has changed. HAL has taken over. They had to have known what they were doing. Like a sort of mental syndrome, the appeal of their dream future, along with the profit potential and gravitas from the iOS side, will turn Apple into the very Big Brother Jobs feared - those who do not share in this dream will be marginalized and pushed away. The future is the new Pages: cookie cutter and pretty.

That always was bunkum, Jobs was only trying to get the faithful to ring the wagons.

Jobs was always the Orwellian figure on the screen using Newspeak to persuade the followers that black was white then black again as we had to follow all his twists and turns.

If you remember the basic plot in 1984 was how the 3 great global powers would switch alliances at intervals and the masses would have to hate the old allies they previously loved and switch to loving their evil foes, on cue.

What does that remind you of? IBM, Microsoft, Intel, Dell, Google, Android… it goes on and on.

Peter, have you updated your list to take into account replies which mentioned certain features aren't missing after all? I haven't checked the whole thing but I noticed you didn't erase "Endnotes" from the "Removed" list even though PaulBee said they're not gone:https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5468056?answerId=23478188022#23478188022.

This is a tough call, if the workaround is so either complicated, time consuming or awkward as to make it more or less unusable, it still remains unusable in my eyes. The issue with unticking "document body" as a means to be able to delete individual pages being a prime example. If I unclick "document body" it removed all inline text from the document and all formatting also. Therefore while I then technically delete a page, I no longer have a functioning document.

I have to disagree in one point what people wrote here: textbox linking is still possible but it works not the same way as in Pages ’09.

Here's an article I wrote about textbox linking in Pages 5.0 (sorry: in German):

http://www.ratschlag24.com/pages-5.0-textfelder-miteinander-verknuepfen

Intersting read. It seems to be a different feature, more like masking. Text flows from one box to the next, but once you have "joined" them, they merge into one singe new shape that you can't separate any more. Meaning you can't move, resize or delete one of those boxes.

But, cool new feature for whom it is useful.

Altered

  • AppleScript Library for Pages 5 has changed with many classes and commands removed which indicates how the feature lists have been slashed
  • Character Styles are in the Text Inspector under Bold, Italic etc
  • Documents reconverted back to Pages '09 lose all template information
  • Drag and Drop text only works with .txt files now
  • Header appears to be multi-column
  • Language set moved to Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide
  • New file format/architecture (but still .pages in name?) not backwardly compatible
  • Page numbering method changed
  • Pages '09 files previewed on iPad via iCloud are irrevocably converted
  • Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript,
  • Tabbing within Table cells appears to be inconsistent, tabbing internally with numbers.
  • Template file storage location moved …somewhere?
  • Update is missing for older installations (Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on their Support Download site)
  • Wrap methods have been cut back severely

Regarding this item:

↪ Template file storage location moved …somewhere?

Someone else mentioned this earlier (page 9, I think?), but I just found it myself, and it looks like their earlier post may have been overlooked.

User templates are now stored in

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iWork.pages (right-click, Show Package Contents) /Data/Library/Application Support/User Templates/

Nice and user-friendly, isn't it? 😝

If Apple were to take the Inspector from iWork '09 and stick it where the content-aware Inspector is now, that would address 90% of my personal gripes. I would even encourage them to whack the "hyperlinks inspector" and the "QuickTime inspector" to save space/acknowledge that no one uses them.

The content-aware paradigm strikes me as very Microsoft Office-ish. At the very least, it's extremely disorienting.

I have used Pages the past several years primarily to create graphic intensive weekly flyers for a small business. Can anyone tell me if these features have been removed in the new version?

Instant Alpha

Bring Forward / Send Backward commands

Access to full color pallette

Adjust Image controls

Ability to scale and adjust images in inches

Very much appreciated. Thanks
