Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

@wfpIndiana: I had to chuckle when you mentioned MSPublisher - thank god it's not on the Mac. I'm in a social group and once a year a committee person puts together a membership directory that comprises a number of pages of "front matter" (list of officers, committees, meeting schedules, the ever-popular 'mission statement,' current bylaws), the actual membership listing (name, address, phone, email, member since, birthday), and then a picture directory of members' face photos. For years it had been done in MSP and each year there were pages missing, mislabeled photos, names out of sequence, you name it. The source for this info was an Excel file plus photos and text. I took it over a couple of years ago, imported the Excel file into Filemaker Pro (which let me also add photos to each member's record) and did the layout in Pages. Using Pages I typed up the front matter, then exported the FMP directory listing and photo listing to PDF, combined everything in Preview, sent the whole thing to a print shop. While it wasn't perfect, at least the earlier errors hadn't crept in.

So at this point, after looking at the "mavericks" section of these boards and after reading the tales of horror about Pages, I'm going to pass on the whole upgrade experience for a year or two. Mtn. Lion and Pages 09 are working quite nicely. There aren't any "must have" new features in Mav that are compelling enough to bring me over.

@PeterBreis0807: Thank you so very much for spearheading this thread and for compiling this incredible list.

@linda2009: You can check out a trial copy of Swift here: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/18896/swift-publisher If you're a student or academic, you can get it for a bit above $20.

Another alternative is iStudio Publisher: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30166/istudio-publisher

I haven't tried either of these but checking out the trials might help you decide.

It seems pretty normal for Apple to include less features when they rewrite software and, in time, add them back in. It also seems pretty normal for people to overreact.

iMovie and FCX come to mind. 🙂

It is not overreacting when the rewritten software destroys their work or makes their work untenable.

btw Apple has not entirely reinstated features and workflows in iMovie and FCX and there is a very long list of other software where they have never replaced or reinstated anything at all.

Tom

I explained in another Forum post, the issue is that you can no longer insert images in Tables, and I suspect other Objects, and MathType's formulae are .pdfs.

Effectively that is a "Removed".

This is a list and I don't want to parenthesise points if I can avoid it.

However to clarify this is an amendment:

Mathtype Equations/Formulae within Tables (and other Objects?)

Grapher Equations/Formulae within Tables (and other Objects?)

Very helpful, Peter. I'm glad you're doing it. The "altered" section is particularly helpful to me.

Those considering an alternative might want to look into Nisus Writer (two versions). It doesn't have everything that was dropped (no outlining), but it does have really wonderful search and replace and is even programmable for fancy manipulations. If you go to the company site you can get a demo.
