10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

I am not at all amused nor impressed by your immaturity and behavior. You are so blinded by the left out features that you completely ignore the improvements made to the application, shooting down every one of them. Not good for someone who's taking on the task of listing additions along with changes and missing features... No one is going to help you compile a complete and accurate list if you respond in that manner.

I've tried transferring my books to ePub, but there are several things that don't transfer. Like an index - why have an index when you can search. Or, footnotes, which have to take on a different life to work but make no sense at the bottome of the page because in ePub there is no bottom of the page. Yet, no ePub program allows pictures with captions except iBooks Author - it was clearly important to them when they made that.

A well-crafted index is not a listing of every ocurrence of a keyword, but the most important ones; it most definitely is not replaced by the search function. A footnote should become a pop-up note/comment, when pages run "forever." And there's no reason why a caption could not be grouped with an image, and effectively become part of the image, so as to survive the transition to epub.

I in turn am not impressed by your ability to analyse or think for yourself.

You scrapped the bottom of the barrel and expected me to not look at each point in turn?

Yes I did shoot most of them down, as they deserved to be. If you looked at them dispassionately as if they were from some other company other than Apple would you honestly rate any of them as either valid, proved or significant?

Man up and make a real case for your arguments.

If you look at the Added list they are genuinely positive additions.

With a couple of exceptions, which I have to confirm, your list just is not. Several of them actually rebound.

I don't know about you, but I would consider an all new design, collaboration, 64-bit performance improvements, full compatibility between web, OS X and iOS, and an intuitive interface that only presents relevant options based on the context to be very impressive additions for a free upgrade. What a joke - someone who isn't even running this version of Pages is compiling a list, shoots down additions to be included in the list stating they have to be "confirmed" (even daring to state his opinion on "bad UI design"), and yet feels free to post completely innacurate statements under the Removed section. Thumbs down to you kind sir.

@Joey!! 【ツ】 I do use the new Pages. And I while I like the idea of full compatibility between Mac, iOS and (especially) web versions, I am distressed that Apple did not warn me that many of my documents would become unusable – that the weeks of time that had gone into preparing mailmerge documents, templates, newsletters, announcements, reports, etc would be useless after the upgrade. That's not even beginning to consider the other iWork apps (some inidividual Keynote presentations took weeks to construct). So I, for one, have found the posts about Pages by @PeterBreis0807 to informative and helpful. He is not denying the improvements, but he is letting us know important facts that Apple didn't.

All of this could have been avoided if Apple had simply informed us, before updating, what the costs would be in terms of lost features and/or made it easier to keep files for the competing versions separate. They didn't. Every time I open a document now I need to ask: does this have any features I need from Pages 4.3 that will be deleted? I can't just double click on a file anymore (and that is after going through every Pages file on my computer and manually changing them to open with Pages 4.3 by default). Yes, I have backups, but I shouldn't need to revert to a back-up just to complete a mailmerge, send a party invitation or process a report for work.

Sorry, but I only have access to the iOS version right now. Could elaborate on what is new when it comes to "collaboration"? I did not notice anything last time I played with the Mac OS X version.

If there is a way of sharing documents with multiple updates with other users real time like with Google Drive, that would definitely be welcome.

I have had to train a lot of people in my time and the one thing I learnt, was that you can teach people how to do things but it is very difficult, impossible in some cases, to get them to think how to do things for themselves.

I am happy to give you a few tips.

1. Firstly don't believe everything you are told. Specs on paper frequently don't make it to the shipped product.

2. Pull things apart. Examine them individually and follow through processes to their conclusions.

Collaboration is still untested and simply does not work for most users, ie everyone who doesn't have exactly this upgrade, Maverick or iOS7 and has to work where there is conversion involved.

64 bit performance is only realised in certain processes, most of which don't apply in such a cut down Word Processor/DTP app. That is assuming that it is actually 100% 64 bit or being used by the hardware. Apple's previous claims to that effect were shown not to be true. It has been pointed out many times, other than addressing vast amounts of disk space and doubling the size of affected code, unless it improves performance it is no benefit to the user.

Full compatibility between web, OS X, and iOS is still untested and can be shown to be not true amongst Apple's own products.

Intuitive Interface is subjective and judging by the large number of users who can not find the many hidden features and options, is already doubtful in Pages 5, because it is contextual. Wrong context or incomplete context and nothing is visible. There are no clues as to how to reveal the necessary Controls/Inspectors. That is why DOS is dead and hopefully permanently buried.

Feel free to point out any errors. Substantiate them with more than "I'm sure…"

…and they go in the list.

The interesting thing about full compatability is that Apple seemingly assumes I want to be able to edit on my iPad and iPhone what I created on my Mac. I don't. Previously, when opening a file on my iPad, I would be given the option to create a duplicate so as to not alter the work I did on my Mac. I only create very simple files on my iPad (I have yet to use Pages on my iPhone), usually just entering text that I will later manipulate on my Mac. Granted, this is my style and not everyones. Based on Apple's feedback page and how I use Pages, Apple defines me as a Pro user. They just took away much of what I need to do my 'pro' work that so that I can edit on my iPad.

One of the things that made Pages 09 so great to me was the ease of layout, and it's why I moved off MS Word. But losing a feature like linked text boxes (selecting text boxes and choosing unite in 5 is not the same) makes layout really difficult. I also can't rearrange pages via the thumbnail view. Or any other view that I can tell. And I can't duplicate a page, except to select all the items on a page and then copy and paste to a new page. (Originally I thought I couldn't add a page in the middle of a document, but I have since 're-learned' how to do this.) Notice how 'simple' all the new templates are?

There are some cool things that I am excited about, but I do think Apple should have been more forthcoming in stating that it cut functionality to enable full compatability.

To be fair with Apple, it's difficult to please everyone.

Before I was complaining that the Mac apps, the iOS apps and the web apps were not compatible which made the whole synching useless in most cases. Now it looks like the apps are compatible and allow collaboration, which will improve my workflow in many ways. But many many many features are missing from Pages 5.0 — probably because it would have been difficult to implement them in iOS and iCloud quickly.

Although I use more professional solutions for serious DTP, i more than once prepared quick magazine templates on Pages. Now it sounds like this would be impossible on Pages 5.0, which is disappointing.

Let's hope that the missing features will come back with time and that Pages 5 will still be compatible with the companion iOS and web apps.

In the meantime, as many said here, it is still possible to use the old version of Pages.

Oct 27, 2013 1:16 AM in response to PeterBreis0807

I'm a teacher and I use Pages to make papers. I think Pages 5.0 is missing:

  1. the ability to save a paragraph styles WITH a numbered list, not separeted (now I need to take 2 steps, 1st set the paragraph style, 2nd set the list style);
  2. the fn key shortcut for the paragraph style;
  3. the ability to create a table of contents with a numbered list (to make school papers, the table os contents must be with the chapter number next to the chapter name).

Fortunetely the Pages 09' is not deleted with the instalation of the Pages 5.0, now I will try to downgrade the iPad version.
I hope Microsoft do not discontinuate Word for Mac or I will, unfortunetely, need to chage to bugwindows by working needs.

Oct 27, 2013 1:28 AM in response to PeterBreis0807

pages has always had dual roles: word processing and page layout

so many people have said that the new pages cant delete individual pages.

this is true for pages:word processing.

for pages: page layout, you can delete individual pages

this makes total sense to me.

not dumber, just different, and definitely easier to use

most of the menus are now contextual so it is a little bit difficult to really see what total features are actually missing or not.

what's not to like?

1/ apple did us all a great favour by preserving our iWork 09 apps in a safe folder to use if we still want. why complain? you didn't loose anything.

2/ the new versions are absolutely great: i have been hesitating for years about making iWork a requirement for persons at my company. now i can do it since the learning curve is so low that anybody can do what they want on these apps really quickly.

3/ what no one is talking about is the additional way to share: by link not by file. sending pages or numbers versions to anyone, including windows only people /companies is now so easy. pages/numbers/keynote documents look so much better than their windows equivalents. now you can share the original document.

thanks
