Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

No, this is not a matter of opinion. PeterBreis0807 can, in fact, predict the future. But anyone who claims, based on their history "since it started in 1976", that Apple will bring the lost features back, is dismissed as apologetic and must provide proof of their "opinion".

And Apple never discusses their intentions, except when they do, and then the angry mob's leader dismisses that too.

That's how this works, see?

But fear not, he's just a lovable funny guy with access to Apple's "official announcements". Hahaha so funny, because, well, he's just that way. We all take him so seriously with his funny jokes alternating with angry thrashing and ignoring whatever doesn't suit him. Apple certainly takes him seriously and is shaking in their boots to appease him. Why wouldn't they?

When opening a document that was created in Pages '09 with Pages 5 it is not possible to open it again in Pages'09. You first have to export it from pages 5 to Pages '09, what is really very userfriendly...

Unfortunaley an export back from Pages 5 leads to several losts. E.g. the templates within a document get lost and the TOC will no longer work.

I like the switching between Pages 5 and Pages '09 - it is very entertaining and a good remedy against boredom in long lasting nights. I think that's what Apple wanted to create: Fun for the user...

For lot of documents I exported back to Pages '09 it is impossible to open them in Pages 5 again - jI get the very detailed information: "The document cannot be opened".

I have to create a new and fresh document in Pages '09 (or in Pages 5), copy the content in it and them I can open it in Pages 5

In iWorks '09 you could select an image, duplicate it, move the duplicate to a new location and then continue duplicating by using cmd-d and the duplicates would retain their relative spacing. I used this a lot to lay things out, but now it's GONE. I'm not sure what you would call this feature.

Can you please double confirm there is nothing else happening to kill the T.O.C. and the round cycle editing between Pages '09 and Pages 5?

You lose the Pages '09 captured layouts because that feature has been removed from Pages 5.

Why not trash/archive Pages 5 and go back to Pages '09 which should still be in your Applications/iWork folder?

Why not? Because they offered us a new programm and I'm trying and experimenting. Pages '09 has gone (it is still on my computer and it is still my tool for my work (Pages 5 is just for experiments), but we have to accept that Apple has made a decision. Pages 5 is buggy and really disappointing for pro-users who write more than a letter for grandma, but Apple never will bring back Pages '09 - in what kind ever. We have to swallow it - or to switch to another program (but MS Word is no alternative, not for me)

Next issue:

When exporting an epub-file from Pages 5 in some documents the titles are on one side and the following text is on the next side. I couldn't get out why and I don't have that issue when exported from the Pages '09-version.

But one thing is better when exporting an epub from Pages 5: When I activate hyphenation in the .pages-document that will be took over in the epub - not so when exported from Pages '09. But in the end Pages 5 is unusable for generating epubs - the file are getting 5 - 10 times larger than epub created in Pages '09

Hi, PolyFK: It took 7 or 8 "unsubscribe" attempts before it "took." Your mileage may vary, but I'd suggest: try and try again.

Apple 09 still exists as it was and is still useable for old documents and new. You can find it in a folder on your Mac. You can export to 09 any documents you opened in or make in Page 5.0. Pages 5.0 was designed from the ground up to work across platforms and will be having many of the same features originally in 09 added to it over time. There is an Apple forum open to take your suggestions about features you most want to have in 5.0. Read about it here:

As you like to copy and paste from one thread to another, here is my reply to you previously:

The application is not "Apple 09", and no longer exists as was.

There are now unnecessarily added problems working with and maintaining Pages '09 documents in both Mavericks and with iCloud.

There is a hard to follow matrix of problems and errors converting between the multitude of .pages versions, particularly Pages 5. A great deal of formatting can be destroyed or so altered as to render the file broke. Presuming it can be opened at all.

The loss of over 90 features in Pages 5 means converted files can be so altered as to be unrecognisable and unusable.

The contrast in capabilities between Pages 5 and Pages '09 is readily apparent just by looking at the newsletter templates which are rich and fully designed in Pages '09 but flat and crude in Pages 5.

Given the difficulty of migrating work from iWork '09 to the current Maverick versions, with the prospect of more to come, continuing to work in the older format simply adds to the backlog of future problems and the prospect that the older software will be completely eliminated from the Mac just as it has from the App Store.

There have been some who strenuously object to any questioning of Apple's actions and label the flood of feedback in these forums and elsewhere as FUD. Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.

The Fear has been created by Apple unilaterally removing iWork '09 from the App Store, and pushing the 'update' on users. Apple gave no warning that files would be altered and damaged by the new Pages which was actually sold as an enticing major upgrade. The consequences confirmed users' fears that their work will become eventually totally, not just partially, inaccessible and unusable just as Apple made AppleWorks files inaccessible and unusable.

Apple's lack of communication on landing such a major change on its users has caused the Uncertainty. Users do not know whether to stay with Pages, Keynote or Numbers because they do not know what Apple plans for any of them.

Both the sudden, arbitrary change and the lack of consideration of the consequences to users work by Apple, plus the lack of a road map as to when if ever Pages will be restored to full functionality has lead to the Doubt that iWork will ever be the productivity suite it was, or ever be software that Apple customers can entrust their work to.

Apple has in one stroke proved itself to be an unreliable supplier for anyone who values their Work.

The only question is that given all the FUD generated by Apple, what can and should users do next?

Actually, support.apple.com/kb/6049 is now a blank page (at least at this moment). Hmmmmm....

And I agree with Peter - still waiting for my Rosetta apps to start working again. Anybody remember Quicken? I still have to keep an old 2004 iBook around to run programs Apple broke.

The passive/aggressive schtick of some of these responses is getting old.
