Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

Many thanks for the prompt response. I gave up with the original inserted images from iphoto on my MacAir and reinserted them on the MacMini where I am printing the two page file and have now managed to print this revised document. In the original two of the five images from iphoto showed up as blank image holders with a question mark and a diagonal line across when printed, though the Pages screen displayed them as normal. So Pages is no longer WYSIWYG. Again it is more reminiscent of Word in this respect only now without many of the features of Word, or even Work 09.

The list on the first page of this thread needs to be updated to reflect that:

- "customise toolbar…" is not missing (since the 5.0.1 update; as reported by Tristan Hubsch on page 89 here a month ago)

- Subscript/superscript buttons are not missing

(since the 5.0.1 update; as reported by Tristan Hubsch on page 89 here a month ago)

Also I'm wondering what 12. ("Endnotes gone") and 14. ("Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site") in the "Missing" list are about. I was at an Apple Store today which gave me the chance to check out Pages 5. As far as I could tell it has Endnotes integration. And from what I've been reading about OS X 10.9.1 it makes sure the update shows up for older installations.

My main gripe with Pages 5 while glancing over it were the missing possibilities to add, duplicate and move pages via the "Page Thumbnails" view. I think that's what 7. ("Duplicate pages gone") in the "Missing" list refers to. Maybe that entry should be modified to clarify that all managing of pages (adding, duplicating and moving) via the thumbnails view does not work in Pages 5. Also, ""Capture pages gone" could be merged in since it's also about that view.

Edit: ah, so apparently "Manage pages and sections from the thumbnail view" is on the list of features which will be re-added short-term. Yay! :-)

The list on the first page of the thread dates back to October and can not be updated, which is why I have taken the list off here and moved it here:

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Apple to replace what it has removed.

They are still working on Final Cut Pro X 3 years after slashing features there.

This change, this time has been for entirely different reasons than those in FCPX which was never cut down to size just to suit iPads.

This may turn out to be a permanent change and certainly Apple abandoning the file formats in iWork is not new, done without warning to users and does not fill users with confidence for the future. Particularly given how hard it is to parse the contents of the new iWork files.

Do not go putting anything important in these formats.

It's unfortunate you cannot update the first post in this thread because it will mislead people to believe features are missing which are not.

I am not willing to take this topic to your personal forum but I did notice that the thread you referred me to still lists "customise toolbar…" as a missing feature even though it is not…

I will hold my breath waiting for Apple to re-add removed features which they have promised to bring back.

As for your telling me not to "not go putting anything important" in the new Pages format: I don't take orders, sorry. ;-)

You DO sound like robo, "Robson".

Since Pages is a moving feast, which Apple will occassionally, after considerable delay, change how do you suggest Apple reorganises its own forum?

I have corrected the iWorkTipsnTricks list to allow for Pages 5.01. Might be an interesting exercise to note when and if features are reintroduced and how long it takes.

Thank you for reminding me to revisit the list, I just added two more features removed that have cropped up in these forums.

How you wish to commit professional suicide is purely up to yourself, but I'm sure you will muddle your way through with a minimum of comprehension.

Congratulations Apple!

You are right up there with the Dalmations!

Now with 101 features removed*:

Over 70% of the local App Store say they hate it.

A remarkable turn around from the previously most popular software in the App Store, after the OS.

* This allows for the reinstated features in v5.01.
