smart mailbox unread counts wrong

After upgrading to Mavericks, my smart mailboxes' unread counts are all wrong. I've tried restarting mail and rebuilding mailboxes and recreating the smart mailboxes, but still they are wrong.

Mail-OTHER, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I fixed this for my smart mailboxes (Mail.app v7.0 1822) by following these steps:

1. Open a terminal

2. Re-index Spotlight

sudo mdutil -E /

I suspect this is related to Mavericks improvements in Spotlight, as it now indexes Mail.app messages much better than in previous releases.

This solution still works! It just solve a wrong unread counts on a smart mailbox, on macOS Sierra.

Thanks!

I'm adding my name, too. Just in case Apple posts a fix.

BTW mine has a certain randomness to it. sometimes the count is correct, sometimes its wrong (i.e. junk mail messages are counted as unread). As with everyone else, I did an upgrade to Mavericks, and now its bust.

I did notice that if I "mark as read" any message that my rule moves to the junk mail box, then it doesn't count as unread. However, that defeats the separate count of number of items in my Junk box.

Is this issue solved under Yosemite?

I keep deleting the envelope-index files like twice a month, you know, like it is described in the article Mail (Mavericks): Reindex messages

After that, it takes Mail one and a half hour to 'import mailboxes' (I have build up quite a lot of mail since 1991).

I would like to look forward to getting rid of this issue. Updating to 10.9.5 did not help unfortunately.

Hi ReindeR Rustema, I have be doing the Beta of Yosemite for a while and have not had an issue. On the other hand, when deleting the envelope didn't work, if I recall correctly, I ended up deleting my accounts, ran disc utility (Repair Permissions), restarted then re-added my accounts and that solved it when I was running Mavericks. Sometimes you may have things languishing that are best repaired by fully starting over and a lot of folks do not regularly run Disc Utilities on updates. It is located in: Applications/Utilities. It is not a harmful programme, but it does not hurt to back up your files first. From my perspective, just like various i devices, there are some many different permutations people have with all the interactions between apps, they (Apple) don't always get everything right, but I have been running the Beta and so far, so good. Certainly none of the hiccoughs with the smart mailboxes we had in Mavericks, but at least the updates are free . . .

I am astounded Apple could have such a serious issue in something as fundamental to computing as its flagship Mail program.

This issue (or erroneous message counts, unread counts, sporadic not-so-smart folders, etc.) when I updated to Mavericks. Perhaps even the release before that (10.8.x). Today I jumped up to latest Yosemite. Same problem. 27000+ people have looked at this forum thread. No solution from Apple.

With that off my chest...

I am disinclined to remove and re-add, or to reindex my mail accounts as I have a few gig of data (mail going back a long way). It's a massive amount of downloading to keep repeating whilst attempting to resolve Apple's Mail issues.

Would someone please advise, does deleting the Mail envelop files result in a full reindex (much like the Reindex option from within Mail itself)? i.e. Resulting in a full redownload of the emails. ?

Thank you,

Jonathan
