Mavericks Mail App and Gmail folders

I have installed Mavericks on my MBA. Now in the mail app, when I drag messages from the inbox to a gmail folder, they leave the inbox. But if I click off of the inbox and then click back on it - they reappear in the inbox.

Anyone else having this problem?

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I do now have a working email client in Mavericks. I paid the $2 in the OS App store & purchased Airmail, and you know what? It works great with Gmail! I've setup 3 Gmail accounts in it and all of them are working fine. No missing mail, no problems deleting, no missing folders, no need to make any changes in my Gmail account settings. Was it worth paying $2 to have a working email client? Aboslutely. If & when Apple ever figures out what they're doing & fixes their own OS Mail app, I'll consider trying it again. Until then, I've removed it from the dock and put Airmail in its place.

For $2, I'm willing to give it a try. (I still feel burned by Sparrow, but the odds of Google ripping another email client out from under me seem pretty low. I hope.)

Oh, I completely understand. The last thing I wanted to do was to purchase a 3rd-party app for what's supposed to be a working native function; but Apple's Mail app in Mavericks is (to me) like a repeat of the iOS 6 Apple Maps fiasco when they dropped Google Maps. When a 3rd-party vendor can create an email client that has no problems with Gmail & Apple's software engineers who have it working in iOS but totally break it in Mac OS, then there's something seriously wrong with how Apple is developing & testing code.

When you responded to my post here, I got an email from the Apple Support Community from my Gmail account via Airmail. Yeah, Airmail definitely works. I hope that it will work for you also.

It works fine (and has been working fine for months) for me.

I've had 'All Mail' disabled forever on Gmail, and I have it set up to actually delete the stuff I delete instead of holding onto it in All Mail. Ie it works almost like an IMAP account is supposed to work.

My setup is pretty much as described here: http://jeffschuette.com/2012/03/07/setting-up-apple-mail-to-rock-and-roll-with-g mail/

I had no problems with Apple Mail in Mountain Lion. When I upgraded to Mavericks, that's when Mail stopped working properly with all of my Gmail accounts. Your page has nothing to do with Mavericks. Apple has broken the native Mail app in Mavericks.

I'm sorry that was over your head. Mail and Gmail works fine for me in Mavericks. No problems at all.

Mine is configured as described in that article, and it is irrelevant that it was written when another OS was current.

If mine works, and that is how it is configured, that may help others either configure theirs such that it works as mine does, figure out what is wrong which could then be forwarded on to Apple.

Thank you so much for insulting me & everyone else here who is experiencing multiple problems with Apple Mail in Mavericks. I'm so glad to know that in order for Apple Mail to work correclty with any Gmail account that every single custom label in each & every Gmail account will have to be modified in order for Apple's software to be able to deal with it. Gee, after I installed Airmail, it read every single label in all of the Gmail accounts that I have setup so far with absolutely no problems whatsoever & without having to change any settings or label names in any Gmail account. By the way, I never actually had to do that before I installed Mavericks.

Isn't interesting that a 3rd-party vendor has no difficulty making Gmail work seemlessly on Mac OS, whereas Apple now expects people to make massive changes to their Gmail accounts to have any possibility of them working with their poorly-written Mail client. It would appear that when Steve Jobs died, so did his passion for making software "that just works" at Apple.

If you're happy with all of your Gmail labels starting with “[Gmail]/” in order for Apple's Mail client to be able to handle them, so be it. I'll stick with Airmail, which has no such undocumented requirement.

My setup with Mountain Lion - and now with Mavericks - is very much as described in your link, including the [Gmail] prefix. However, unless I'm missing something, this still doesn't solve the problem with moving a message to a "folder". The message will retain the Inbox label (in addition to the moved-to folder label) and consequently Mail will cause the message to reappear in the Inbox.

Then the setup likely has nothing to do with it.

If I had seen a problem, I would have reported it.

What I am using now is a migrated account; however, I had deleted and re-added my Mail accounts to verify it worked correctly in various builds. I also used clean gmail accounts added directly in Mavericks, including bare drive installations without migrating data.

Hey everyone,

Seems like alot of people are having problems with Mail and google mail after upgrading to Mavericks. After about an hour, I've got my Mail app working as it did before my upgrade to Mavericks...and it came somewhat accidentally. LOL. So, if it works for me, maybe it'll work for you. It's expensive, but maybe Apple will find some value to my solution.

Like many people, I had installed Letter Opener by Creative in Austria so that I'd be able to open up Windat files from my wife. I forgot that I had it installed until I upgraded to Mavericks, and upon opening up my Mail app, a window popped up saying that my version of Letter Opener was no longer compatible. Didn't pay much attention to it, and like many of you, looked for other solutions (Outlook, Postbox, etc.). I actually had Postbox up and running, and I thought, "Heck! Let me upgrade Letter Opener before I forget!" So, I upgraded it to the latest version and opened Mail to see if the window would pop up. And wouldn't you know it! All my mail on the google server started popping up in Mail just like it used to!!

I don't work for Creative in Austria. It's expensive ($30)! But, my Mail is working! Boo yah!

Hope it works for you guys! Let me know!

I agree. I can't believe that Mail made it through beta. It has horrible issues with all my accounts - 4 Gmail accounts + 2 Hostgator.

I also switched to Airmail. It is a fine piece of software. If you are used to Mail then naturally you have to get used to some different things. But Airmail is quick and works well and has many interesting features Mail does not have. I'm sticking with Airmail for now.

Every once in a while I load up Mail again, but it's basically unusable in Mavericks. For one thing, every time I switch an email account and look at a different Inbox it takes 10-15 seconds to display the contents! In Airmail, startup is initially slow as it loads everything in, but the operation is very fast. And the built-in labeling feature helps you organize things better than in Mail.

If I knew Mail had so many problems I probably would not have upgraded to Mavericks. But since Airmail works ok, and I'm not having any other problems, I'm ok with it.

I use Gmail to host my own domain name mail and initially I also had issues with mails that I filed away in folders reappearing in my Inbox. Without really doing anything except logging in to Gmail via the web and returning to the Mail app closing/opening... the filing-to-folders seems to work now!!

(I always had show All Mails switched on in Gmail and when I logged on it still was... funnily enought though the All Mails folder has disappeared from my Mail app (or I can't find the new location but so far this doesn't pose a problem because I rarely use it))

Gmail is explicitly mentioned in the Maverick features guide for Mail which seems interesting...

Hi everyone,

I have been following discussions, reading forums, and doing every possible test.

Mail in Mavericks is clearly buggy, and Gmail is not properly supported.

So I guess, we can only wait till Apple fixes the issues with an update.

In the meantime, as many other users suggested, Airmail is a very good alternative to Mail (and Sparrow), but I also found another great app, that looks very similar to Mail.

It also has advanced filters and nice extra features.

I'm talking about Postbox, which I prefer over Airmail because it looks cleaner and it's almost like using Apple Mail.

I'm happy with that so far, hope this is going to help someone else.

I also checked out the Postbox site. The thing that caused me to hesitate was that it looks like it hasn't been updated since April, the site didn't mention Mavericks and they specifically say they do not provide one-on-one support. Plus I couldn't find a support forums to read through and see if peoplel are having issues.

That's one reason I decided to try Airmail rather than Postbox. Airmail has support forums, and support staff which get back to you, and seem to be actively producing new Maverick-friendly versions.

Please correct me if I'm wrong about Postbox.

Thanks,

doug
