Getting iMovie 10 to run on old iMac?

Happy Mavericks day, y'all!

It would appear that iMovie 10, which was released along with Mavericks, won't work on my model iMac 24-inch Mid 2007. It won't update because it doesn't support the video card. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where one might dig in an effort to trick it in to working? I don't want the advanced bells and whistles just general conformity with my other systems.

Cheers

@Bthresher

I did a test for you and I just captured video in iMovie v9.0.9 on Mavericks via iSight with no problems! FYI there is no such thing as iMovie 09 unless you are referring to the iMovie that came with iLife 09 which was actually version 8.0! Also copied an installed iMovie 10 back to 'unsupported' iMac and successfully imported from iSight. So your problem must be coming from somewhere else.

I tried the iSight camera with Mavericks and iMovie '09 and it worked for me.

I also bought Final Cut Pro X when it became available on the Mac Store after finding the trial version quicker than iMovie. That works fine with Mavericks (so far), but that is also meant to require openCL as well?

What is strange is that Aperture and Final Cut Pro are faster/more responsive than iPhoto 9.5 and iMovie 9.0.9.

I would expect "Pro" apps to place more demand on the iMac?

AutoUpdate worked for me!

I have an iMac late 2008 (8,1) 2.66 GHz with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB

I was not able to update to iMovie 10 using the AppStore by hitting the "Update" button it gave me the error you described "We could not complete your update. Your computer's video card does not meet the miniumum system requirements"

But I had turned on Auto Updates previously and right after I just tried to hit the "Update" button(for like the third time, twice yesterday) in the AppStore and got the error again and then I noticed that Launchpad was downloading something. Looked at my Launchpad and noticed that iMovie was downloading. I fully expected that the install would fail just like in the AppStore but I waited anyway and IT WORKED! It downloaded and the install succeeded. I am now running iMovie 10 on iMac late 2008 (8,1) 2.66 GHz with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB!

In case anyone is confused about what I mean with AutoUpdate, go to System Preferences->App Store and turn on "Automatically check for updates" and "Install app updates"

I have your fix without having to use another mac.

- Open AppStore

- Goto Updates Tab

- On the top right where it says "Update All" click the drop down arrow

- Select update in an hour

It will update iMovie in an hour. I had to go back to my iMac and enter my password but after I did that it updated iMovie! I am running on a

20 inch mid 2007 iMac

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB

It's definitely using the Radeon HD 2600 Pro my import from my camcorder SD card was blazing fast, used to be way slower on iMovie 9.0.9 and now I can do AVCHD so I was doing download that was higher quality too(I used to set my camera to lower res because 9.0.9 couldn't do AVCHD).

The fact that the import was faster tells me that iMovie 10 is using the GPU hardware.

I really think the install bug is just in the installer, nothing to do with iMovie 10 itself. Which is also why Auto Update worked for me.

I have the same mid-2007 iMac, mine with upgraded 2.6 GHz Core 2 Duo, 6 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT w/ 128 MB RAM, and upgraded 1 TB hard drive.

It installed just fine for me (well, other than some nutty App Store issues where it decided to re-upgrade all my iLife and iWork apps three times... I had to wait for the third download to finish before they would work.)

But it is *VERY* flaky. iMovie crashes ALL THE TIME now. It crashes 75% of the time I try to import video from an AVCHD SD card. Sometimes just browsing the video library will crash it.

Note that all of my video library (events and projects) are on an external USB hard drive, and I have about 800 GB worth of raw+project files. The vast majority of the video is imported AVCHD, with some MJPEG and old DV. I don't know if my library size is just too big for it to handle well... (Older versions of iPhoto had problems with my photo library, too.)

I have the 2007 iMac 20" 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo model with the Radeon HD 2400 XT 128mb graphics card.

iMovie would not download until I read the post about clicking on the "attempt in an hour" option.

That worked like a charm. Unfortunately, iMovie has crashed on me twice. I'm hopeful a few tweaks and, maybe, an update will fix the problem.

Hey guys might bactually have a fix.

I was having the same problem every time I would try to update imovie I got the error message that my video card was not compatible.

I tried and tried for 3 days to update to no avail.

Well last night instead of updating on the spot I scheduled an update while I was sleeping you can do this very easily it,s a onlick proposition moving on I woke up this morning and it was down loaded and it is almost done installing.

So to recount I did not update by going to the app store and clicking update rather I scheduled an update while my computer was off btw my computer wakes it,s self at 6 am every morning I woke up at 8 am and it was already downloaded.

I really hope this helps.
