Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I can open iBooks on my MacBook Pro, but when I double click to open a book, the book comes up, then disappears. When I view all the open windows, it shows that my open book is there, but when I go back to my normal desktop screen, the book still isn't there. How can I actually read one of my books?

Sorry to hear the problem persists. Please remember to report it to Apple. In the iBooks Menu choose to give Feedback. When they get enough complaints, they'll fix the problems.
In the meantime, the workaround above is helping a lot of people. Give it a try.
On Oct. 24 my iBooks mysteriously started working perfectly without me doing anything. Today it is back to disappearing books and I have to use zoom to see them. I did nothing to iBooks in the interim. Very bizarre.
Today's app update fixed my iBooks issue (at least for now).

This happened on my iPad I just went to settings > iBooks > disabled Online Content. Viola, it works, hopefully this helps you.
Thanks to the person who had suggested taking iBooks fullscreen (I'm on El Capitan). When I did that, then zoomed the hidden window, I was presented with a modal dialogue box asking if I wanted to sync across devices using a different account. I could read the book after I dismissed the dialogue.
