iBooks in Mavericks lost 700 books

For a short while, iBooks Mavericks showed all my books and pdf's. They all disappeared. I found the directory ~/Library>Containers>com.apple.BKAgentService>Data>Documents>iBooks>Books with about 700 folders, epub files and PDF's.

When I right-click to <Open In> and select iBooks, iBooks tells me the book is already in my library. But there are no books visible in any of the tabs in iBooks.

Some but not all of the books are on my iPad 4. I can'f find a way to sync the new iBooks with the iPad.

I hope someone finds an answers. I'm stuck.

I opened iTunes using my iPhone library. Of course "Books" on the left library pane is gone now. However at the top of iTunes where Apps, Music, Tv Shows, etc are, there is a Books option there and only there.

I opened that and I then needed to "select" which books should sync to my iPhone. I chose the new test book, did a sync and bam it showed up on my iPhone.

So think of the iBooks app as "the library" Then in iTunes you need to go to the top and open Books and then actually select which books to sync with a particular iDevice.

I haven't done any testing with PDFs yet. It's early and I need more coffee. 😕

While that did work for the iPhone and Pad it did nothing to get my PDF documents back into my MBP, Air, nor desktops.

So many problems.

I have a large pdf and ebook library.

  1. Imported my pdfs and ebooks to iBooks and quickly realised that there is no way to update metatdata on pdf's which is absolutely infuriating
  2. Cannot select the location of the ibooks library and given the amount of books and pdfs i have i usually prefer they are stored on an external drive
  3. All pdf's have now vanished from ibooks and when i try to add them back it says they are already in the library (well they very well might be in there somewhere but it would be nice if i could see them)

Ive now just given up, my perfectly organised library is now a huge mess and i have given up.

Can anyone suggest another app that will allow me to organise my pdf library, edit and manage metadata, and that also has a good ipad app?

This is just ridiculous! I spend so much time working on my library and now it's a mess.

1. I try to use iBooks to import my itunes books on start. It got frozen and as many times I tried it didn't work. I had to reinstall my mac. I have 1400 files. epubs and PDFs

2. It's impossible to edit metadata! Are they crazy?! I have so many pdf organised, and if I add it again, they loose metadata. So all pdf are a mess, and I cant edit it in iBooks.

3. Library is hidden and now I cant choose where to keep it. I hate that. I want to put it on separate drive, as I need space.

4. iBooks extracts epubs, so you see folders with crazy names and files, and most of all, everything takes up twice the space!

Apple is hitting my nerve. Fist they messed up iOS7 with that stupid white interface, now I thought at least OSX will be ok, but no, they had to mess with normal peoples libraries and workflows.

That's it. I'm downgrading back to Mountain Lion!

Hi From Belgium,

same problem, I've more than 4000 PDF/epub on my itunes database (lot of technical docs.)

Hoppefully I've a copy on another folder.

just upgrade my iMac with Maverick. Everything ok expect for itunes and ibooks

My iMac have 2disk:

1. 256Go SSD Apple (25 go free)

2. 2To disk internal (250Go free)

it's a standard configuration from Apple of December 2011.

Because I've a huge itunes database (170Go) I've move it few month ago to the 2nd disk

to leave place on the SSD.

No problem with that until today.

Now when I want to open ibooks, it say that it didn't have enough place to move the books!

Of course because it want to move all my epub abd PDf file of the itunes database (who is on the 2nd disk)

to the fist disk SSD who of course don't have enough place

the folder of ibooks database is:

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/ibooks

on the SSD.

and my iitunes folder is: Macintosh HD2/Music

Is anybody know how to tell ibooks to use the 2nd disk?

The option key which can be use for iphoto and itunes to select the libray folder don't work with ibooks.

I've try a alias but it refuse.

So from now I don't synchronize anymore my iphone and ipad , I don't want to loose everything on both if I synchronize ith mac. 😢😟😮

By advance

Thanks

S.

Just found this solution to remove iBooks and return to iTunes managing my collection.

Worked brilliantly for me.

I just figured out a way to get iTunes back to managing my books and pdfs.

1.) Kill the bookstoreagent service using the Activity Monitor.

2.) Delete the file for that service: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CommerceKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/bo okstoreagent

3.) Use AppCleaner to get rid of iBooks.

Problem solved!

You could create a link to deceive the iBooks..

After the iBooks folder is created in this location:

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks

Create another iBooks folder on the second disk.. and move all files/folders in iBooks to this folder.. after that remove iBooks folder.

Then use this command:

"ln -s <iBooks folder on secondary disk> ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks"

It should work.. Not tried myself on iBooks but did similar things with iTunes before.

A good solution if you want to get rid of iBooks completely.. But what if you want to read your epub files on your Mac too? Other epub readers are not very pretty..

Well, after thinking about iBooks' interface.. Maybe we're better without it..

Didn't work for me as follows:

Duplicated the Books folder in

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks

Move that folder to desktop.

Opened iBooks

Added a new collection

First, dragged the entire folder to the new collection

Result: hundreds of prompts to replace existing books in the library.

Next, shutdown and restarted iBooks

Highlighted new collection

Dragged an book file from the Books folder to new collection

Result prompted me to replace existing book.

Whaddya think?
