iBooks in Mavericks lost 700 books

For a short while, iBooks Mavericks showed all my books and pdf's. They all disappeared. I found the directory ~/Library>Containers>com.apple.BKAgentService>Data>Documents>iBooks>Books with about 700 folders, epub files and PDF's.

When I right-click to <Open In> and select iBooks, iBooks tells me the book is already in my library. But there are no books visible in any of the tabs in iBooks.

Some but not all of the books are on my iPad 4. I can'f find a way to sync the new iBooks with the iPad.

I hope someone finds an answers. I'm stuck.

I just got off the phone with Apple Support. We could not sync sideloaded epubs from iBook application to ipad. I have been instructed to use a back up from Go Flex from a time before I updated my os x software. Hopefully that will restore the whole iTunes library. Just finished and NO IT DIDN"T WORK!! You cannot sync books unless bought on iBooks UGH The only thing I may be able to do is just restore the previous sideloaded books. No new books can be added. Neither Tech or I can figure out how to do it. We can get them into iBooks app on the desktop but not to ipad or iphone

From the quick play that I had, you manage the books on your mac using iBooks (i.e. you can simply drag and drop them into iBooks(mac version)). Then when you connect your iPad and iTunes starts up, the books you have added in iBooks(mac) will be synced to your iPad (if you have chosen to sync all books) or you can control which ones to sync using the books tab in iTunes.

If you delete the book from your iBooks(mac) library it will be removed from your iPad next time you sync.

In summary manage the books in your library using iBooks(mac) and control the syncing using the books tab in iTunes.

Someone has just posted a method of reverting back to iTunes for managing books even after an initial migration to iBooks. Check out this thread:

Re: Not impressed! No edit info, no library management!

This Worked!! Deleted the new iBook app on computer then iTunes went back to the old way! Works the same way it did pre-Mavricks Thanks

I tried to add my epubs and pdfs from backup to iBooks. My epubs have been added, however no pdf is added. I found all pdfs are copied to "Temporary" folder under iBooks directory. I copied a sample pdf files from the backup to any temp folder and remove the files from the "Temporay" folder. I tried to add it again to iBooks app and it's sucessfully been added. When double click it on iBooks, it open it with Review app.

The problem is that the pdf files in the backup folder are locke. When copied to a temp folder, they are not anymore locked in the new folder. iBooks copies the pdf files first to the tomporary folder, then move them to "Books" folder. But because the files are still locked in Temporary, iBooks cannot move them to "Books" folder. I cannot understand the reason. I'm still trying to figure it out!

Any way, I can now add pdfs to iBooks app under Mavericks. 🙂 But i wish it could be displayed witgin iBooks reader instead of Review app. 😟

So i have transferred all my books from itunes to my ibooks app, it worked. i dont know if this helps but my books located in itunes were under the folder in itunes library under itunes media...thats where my books are backed up automatically. My problems are syncing my books from ibooks to my ipad; after installing mavericks this process doesnt work for me. Used to be able to drag and drop books from my itunes to my apple devices. Anyone know a way to do it easy like that instead of manually syncing which takes forever??

My ebook collection is hosed too. iBooks imported everything "fine" at first. But I wasn't able to edit any metadata and it didn't keep any of the metadata that I edited when it was in iTunes. So I had 100s of PDFs with no author. Great job. :/

A day or two later, my iBook library is empty with only the ebooks I've purchased from the iBookstore. I can't even add books to the library.

My ebooks still exist on my hard drive. However, they no longer have readable file names. The file names are now just a bunch of random characters.

I wish I could go back to using iTunes to manage my ebook library. What a worthless app. And I was so excited to finally be able to read epubs natively.

I'm surprised the Apple blogs aren't talking about it at all. It's a debacle.

I agree entirely with Dave in Anacortes. I pay a premium for a macbook air and an iphone and an ipad so that the whole system will work effortlessly. If Apple can't provide that in fairly short order, I will adjust my buying habits accordingy.

Ibooks is an unmitigated disaster. I can't sync my books, I can't even add many of my pdfs to ibooks ("permissions" for "temporary"). Everything was organized in itunes and it was easy and it worked. Why break what's working? I have zero interest in using ibooks on a laptop -- I have an ipad for that. But there wasn't an option to NOT transfer books to ibooks from itunes.

As it is, I can email books to my ipad/iphone, so I'm ok for a little while (though I will have to I suppose use another app for storing/searching them). The thing is, I could have a motorola phone and a nexus tablet (at half the price) and be having a similar or better experience right now.

Apple, I suggest you think hard, you are going to kill the golden goose with your attempt to force us to buy books and movies from you (I'm assuming that's the business rationale here).
