iBooks in Mavericks lost 700 books

For a short while, iBooks Mavericks showed all my books and pdf's. They all disappeared. I found the directory ~/Library>Containers>com.apple.BKAgentService>Data>Documents>iBooks>Books with about 700 folders, epub files and PDF's.

When I right-click to <Open In> and select iBooks, iBooks tells me the book is already in my library. But there are no books visible in any of the tabs in iBooks.

Some but not all of the books are on my iPad 4. I can'f find a way to sync the new iBooks with the iPad.

I hope someone finds an answers. I'm stuck.

It is a weird email, which ends with "end." - no greetings, no thank you. And they attach two files, iTunesMigration.log and Books.plist, which doesn't make sense, since they ask me to send a bunch of files - including the whole list of books I own.

Honestly, if it comes from Apple, I'm appalled by the way they conduct business, since sending out this kind of emails looks really like phishing!

I think I have the solution, seems like books in new iTunes before iBooks (Mac) is loaded stays in place. So there were a couple of things which happened. I had some side loaded epub which I could see in iTunes and those were also on my iPad after i had the latest iTunes and Mavericks loaded on my MBP.

In iTunes itself when no iPad etc is connected in the left side there is menu which can change selection between Audio Video etc. Over there “Books” will show as an option only the first time, and once clicked it will say “Books have been moved to "iBooks” however after that “Books" will not show in that menu. Also after that when i load epub in iBooks (Mac) they work fine, however when i connect iPad and see the "Books" menu in iTunes the epubs do not show up, hence they are not synced.

The solution, if at that stage, go to your iBooks (Mac), go to status bar, file menu, click on "Move Books from iTunes", even if the books in itunes are the same its fine, i didnt see any duplication, however what did happen was, iTunes suddenly picked up my entire iBooks library, including the sideloaded contect and synced it to my iPad.

Hope this work for you.

I will give it a try. Have to reinstall the iBook app to desktop. When I picked up my iPad Air on Friday, I was telling the Apple guy about the iBook problem. He went to the back and brought his personal MacBook Pro out and connected his iphone to it. We experimented with it and it was what you are talking about. It didn't work but I am willing to give it a try on my computer. I will follow your instructions step by step.

Hopefully it will work.

I think Apple should create a file sharing section under the Apps like they do with Kindle, Marvin, Sony Reader, etc when your iDevice is connected. I had mentioned that to the Apple tech when I was on the phone with him last week. I believe that would sort of solve the problem atleast for me it would

thanks to all

I have looked at some of the replies and I too had the problem with 1076 books all missing. I tried many things which didnt work. Eventually I managed to get purchased books in but nothing else - big deal all 20 or so.... I then tried opening iBooks on my MacPro and I added the books as you would in iTunes. When I later went back to iTunes all the books were again listed under the books tab, and now are downloading to my ipad Air. Really not sure whether this will help anyone but it worked for me.

Same problem here. Lost all of my professional literatur in PDF and ePub format. This is really, really bad! Books are still on the file-system (iTunes Media/Books) but the "Books" tab does not show in iTunes and I can't see them in iBooks too. When I try to copy&paste the books into iBooks I get error messages telling me that I don't have permissions to "Temporary". W T F? Has anyone at Apple ever tested this?

That was my issue. Do you have a mac if so, open ibooks on your mac and add the books like you would have done with itunes. Once I did that and they all appeared in ibooks (i didnt move the original file destination in itunes) I attached my iPad Air back to itunes and all the books were there under the books tab.

Not sure what you would do if you dont have a mac though, but all 1079 books are back on my iPad 🙂
