iBooks in Mavericks lost 700 books

For a short while, iBooks Mavericks showed all my books and pdf's. They all disappeared. I found the directory ~/Library>Containers>com.apple.BKAgentService>Data>Documents>iBooks>Books with about 700 folders, epub files and PDF's.

When I right-click to <Open In> and select iBooks, iBooks tells me the book is already in my library. But there are no books visible in any of the tabs in iBooks.

Some but not all of the books are on my iPad 4. I can'f find a way to sync the new iBooks with the iPad.

I hope someone finds an answers. I'm stuck.

Hirschnase,

Did you do this with all your books / pdfs at once?

I closed ibooks, moved all my files out of the bookfolder ~/Library/ Containers/ com.apple.BKAgentService/ Data/ Documents/ iBooks/ Books into a tempfolder on my desktop and copied them back not more then 50 at once. This worked for allmost all books, although ibooks told me for every book that it was already in my library, i clicked okay (enter) almost a thousand times. But in the end it worked :)

Maybe you can give it a try and report back.

In addition, i changed the permissions to everyone read / write in the com.apple.BKAgentService folder before i copied the books back.

I ran iBooks for the first time today cos I could no longer access my books in iTunes. It said it was transferring over 100 books from iTunes. At the end just one - the only one I had bought from the iBooks store - showed up. This is really bad. I used that book collection a lot. I've tried various suggestions, including dragging the books from the hidden directory back into iBooks. But it still won't show me all my books. Other ePubs - e.g. bought direct from publishers like O'Reilly - don't show at all. Not at all impressed.

With the new version of iBooks out now I have a mostly fixed thing. I had to reimport all my books again - dragging them onto iBooks from the Books directory deep within Music and iTunes (even though they are not showing in iTunes any more) did the trick. And now it showed epubs I had bought from other places, like the many ones I had from O'Reilly. I had a slight hitch on then syncing to my iPad. All my iBooks books on there vanished! Aarrgghh! But going back into iTunes while syncing a second time I found that it looked like the books syncing settings had changed, and needed updating in iTunes, e.g. to all books synced, or just specific titles. I went for specific titles, and again it worked. And this worked for non-Apple ePubs, and PDFs, as well as iBooks-bought Apple ePubs. So happier again. Phew.

Hi All...

I hope this is the answer. I was having the same problem. I have 38 books in total, mostly PDF's. I am using Mavericks and IOS 7.0.3 on my iphone.

"What I did was added my 2 new PDF books through ibook on my MAC. Then, I went to collections, added a New Collections (Name it what you want). I now moved these 2 PDF books to the New Collections menu and then I noticed my books on ITunes went up from 38 to 40. So on syncing my books through ITunes, this 2 new books (PDFs) now show up on my iphone."

It worked for me. I hope it works for everyone too.... I read most of the replies here with none helping. But this did. I am sure this is what fixed it. As I have tried many other options, even adding the files to library on itunes didnt work

Sure I just hope it works for you! Here's a link http://m.wikihow.com/See-Hidden-Folders-on-Mac-OS-X-and-Other-Recent-Models to show you step by step. Once completed go to where the iBooks are stashed (you have to be able to see the hidden files to find the iBooks) and once you open the destination folder you should be able to see all ur books. After alllll these steps open the app for iBooks and if you are lucky like me you should see them! Hope it works Doug, good luck:-)

Go to /Library/Containters/com.apple.iBooksX/Data/Library/Preferences and remove the com.apple.iBooksX.plist file (do not delete it yet!). Restart iBooks and hit get started. I seems to rebuild the library and shows the books present in the iBooks Library folder. Then quit the app again and place the .plist file back in its original location (just to be sure). Worked for me and I had a similar issue to yours.

Cheers! 🙂
