Glad I didn't buy a new iPhone 5s. This is a deal breaker, my money can go elsewhere from now on.
I wrote a small open source app for iOS and OS X to address this issue. It does basic calendar synchronization over USB on Mavericks. The iOS app has been submitted to the AppStore and is currently waiting for review.

Well done! but am I right in thinking that at the moment this is just one way? needs to be bidirectional and ideally sellectably one directional either way.

Yes, at the moment this is one way from iOS to OS X. Furthermore, all calendar entries on OS X are first deleted before being readded from iOS. My calendar entries on OS X were not up to date anymore anyway, so this did not bother me much. But of course you are right, it would be better to do a proper merge of the calendar entries, the way iTunes did before.
Feel free to open a issue at github and put a bounty on it at https://www.bountysource.com😉
That is fantaistic, well done. A cheeky question; can you do something about Contact's the same way. It will be interesting to see if Apple actually makes it available on AppStore.

Yes, should be possible. Would require to rename the app, though (iosCalSync). 😉

I'll keep you updated.

This is terrific news! Hope you make this a bidirectional sync and include Contacts. Let's hope you get approval from App Store. I for one will be one of your earliest customers.
This was my question, and reading these posts I aparently have no choice. I'm angry that I won't be able to back up my contacts where I choose - which is not in some remote computer with a fluffy name. This is Apple strong-arming its customers. I have a question as to options for backing up my contacts some other way, and I'll post that separately if someone else hasn't already.
This is terrible! I've had an iPhone for only six months and was so proud to finally have an easy way to sync my contacts. How can this be? I will never use iCloud. What was Apple thinking here? This really is a set-back. I will move away from Apple products.
I had the same problem and wrote a simple and very basic workaround to synchronize my calendar entries from iOS to OS X.
It's in the iOS AppStore now, for free:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/devicesync-for-ios/id737867459?l=de&ls=1&mt=8
You have to download the OS X app as well: https://github.com/yep/DeviceSync-for-OS-X/releases
This is in a proof of concept state and works for me, but may not suite your needs. If you miss some functionality, please add an issue at github:https://github.com/yep/DeviceSync-for-iOS/issues. Even better, support open source software and add a bounty to your github issue at http://bountysource.com.
I started with the possibility to sync contacts as well and will probably finish this feature as I find some free time.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

Thanks for the APP and wow you managed to get that quick in the app-store!
OK I do not need it but .... could you make one for contacts, Notes and Bookmarks?
And then a real sync (not a one-way-update)? I know a bit more difficult (especially with Calander).
But for Contacts and BookMarks a real sync is important.
In the meanwhile I have started my idea of becoming less OS indepentend and changed from Safari to Firefox, from iPhoto to Lightroom. And I will soon also ditch Mail and Itunes (for music) but still looking for good alternatives.
WHAAAT ??? this is outrageous !!! how do they only dare to force something that is sooo private ! and I thought Microsoft was bad ! if it is not fixed any time soon I am done with apple, because imagine what is next, they will play and force all kinds of redicilous changes like that. But this is truly outragious. I don't care what anyone says, putting your info on any icloud is an immidiate security issue. How do they dare to deprive us from the local sync option!!!!
Apple ! I want my money back for all the divices I have from you! forget you !
I just installed Mavericks on my iMac and Macbook Pro. I can't believe Apple has done this to its customers. I only found this and other related threads when my iPad and 2 iPhones would no longer sync wirelessly with iTunes. I've been screwed by Apple. I never thought I would seriously consider dumping all my Apple kit but I think it has now come to that. Thanks Apple.
Indeed. We refuse to continue with Apple products if they force the us of syCloud! PEERIOD.
AGREED!
