OSX 10.9 update removed java - how to fix that?

After updating to OS 10.9 I could no longer us my most important app PHPStorm because it relies on java and the OSX 10.9 installer sabotaged it.

When I type java on the console it now says

No Java runtime present, requesting install.

request, hu? ***? Where is my java! Googling up and down does not reveal a solution, typing maverick and java in support.apple.com search field reveals nothing useful. Am I the only one using phpstorm on the mac that upgraded to 10.9? Not very likely.

Do I have to download it from oracle?

I'd rather have an apple approved / apple screened installer than something from a third party website like oracle,

but I guess I will have to try that next.

Frustrated,

Michael

EVERYONE DO NOT GO TO JAVA.COM IF YOU ARE TRYING TO RUN A PROGRAM!

Java is a programming language. The author incorrectly stated that he needed Java, however, the error message he posted clearly states, "No Java runtime present, requesting install."

What the author needs is a JRE (Java Runtime Environment). Java.com only has the Java-Plugin (which is the JRE for the browser). The author is using an application, so he needs the JRE for his computer.

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html This where you download Java from so you can run programs.

Consequently, you SHOULD NOT be running Java in the browser. It very unsafe, and has a myriad of security holes that cause your computer become vulnerable. Safari has it disabled for a reason.

The JRE for your computer, however, is rock solid, and lacks security holes.

On a final note: PHPStorm can only run with Apple's Java. The JRE for 1.8 for Mac causes PHPStorm to crash. There is a way around it, but, the developers of PHPStorm do not recommend it.

Just to note. Going to oracle.com or java.com is the same place. They're both web site names which belong to Oracle and will download the same Mac version of Java 8 (current version).

Java from Oracle has only one purpose. And that's to enable Java in your web browsers. If you have no need to run any web enabled Java apps, there is no reason to install it.

If an app says it needs Java runtime installed, then what you need is Java SE 6 from Apple. That allows Java apps to run on your system, completely independent of any web browser. Java 6 does not link to any browser in Lion or later, so does not run within them.
