I just updated to OS X Mavericks. However, after I updated I went to play music from iTunes and the playback quality sounds like my speakers are blown (on both my laptop and external speakers). But this has something to do with iTunes because my other audio from apps like Spotify and Vevo are normal. I restarted my computer but still doesn't make a difference.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Like wise just tried to listen on itunes and the music sounds horrible as if the speakers are blown. But as you said its only if using itunes. Using spotify the music is normal. I am using a 2010 Macbook
I really hope this gets sorted, was my music was going missing from iTunes! Now I can't listen to it properly either!!

I have an iMac 21.5" and am having the same issue. I didn't think to check another audio app, so I was more worried. Other apps play audio just fine, but iTunes sounds like my speaker have blow and/or can't handle ANY volume. These are fairly nice Bose speakers! I sure hope Apple fixes this soon!
I submitted a report last night around 3:00am Pacific Time. Hopefully Apple will be looking into this!

I messed with my equalizer and it seemed to fix my audio where the speakers sound normal.
Open iTunes>Window>Equalizer
I turned mine on and went to the preset "Flat" seems somewhat normal.
Try it out and let me know if it helped you!

It does seem like an equilizer thing doesn't it....
Mine was already on flat, I tried playing with it for a while and couldn't get a 'normal' sound out of it yet.
Anyone else had luck messing with the equilizer or another work around fix?
I usually leave my equalizer on flat and so i turned it off and it fixed the problem, at least it sounds like it did.
I've noticed the same. Not sure if it is iTunes 11.1.2 or Mavericks itself. Either way, I completely turned off the equalizer (mine was flat all the time anyways).
Turning off and on again (or maybe changing presets) seems to work, at least temporarily. In my case the distortion gradually came back after a couple of minutes of playback.
I am having the same issue on my 2012 imac. It sounds like the speakers are struggling with any bass boosting, i.e. sounding a bit muffled.
It is not just iTunes as I have a audio application which allows me to change the equalizer of the whole computer, and any bass boosting causes this problem.
Hopefully apple with resolve this issue with an update.
I have a similar issue - my presets remain unscathed following 10.9 installation but now everything sounds tinny as **** upon play and I have to leave the EQ window open to check/uncheck the 'ON' box *every* time a song starts playing.

I'm having exactly the same issues with my speakers. I changed the equalizer to flat and it just sounds awful!!
I've turned the equalizer off then on again and it seems to have fixed the problem... until the next song starts.
I hope Apple are reading this and get this issue sorted out asap!!
