Aperture 3.4.5 will not update to 3.51. I am not running Mavericks. My system is OS X 10.7.5.
Aperture 3.5 is an Aperture version to support Mavericks and compatibility with IOS 7 devices, and it can only be installed on a Mavericks system.
The upgrade to Mavericks is free from OS X 10.7.5. After upgrading to Mavericks the Aperture 3.5 upgrade from 3.4.5 will also be free.
Found that Apple got at support page:http://support.apple.com/downloads/#aperture
But no download of 3.5 there.
App Store and online solutions are obviously the future. Apple should give people with boxed solution a nice offer to switch to App Store solutions. Other software companies have managed that well.
But that is exactly, what the Aperture 3.5 update is doing. It converts the licence of the boxed retail Aperture 3 versions to an AppStore licence. That is why this update is only available from the AppStore and cannot be downloaded from the Support page. It will pair the registration code of your boxed version with your AppleID.
Well, the language trick might be all good and well, if your system language is something else than English. But if you happen to have English as a system language…
Set the region to U.S:, not only the language to English U.S: And you need to restart the system.
Make sure, Aperture 3 is installed in the Applications folder and the name is Aperture, not Aperture 3 or something.
Sign into the AppStore wth your AppleID.
The download will proceed in the background - look at the LaunchPad for a progress bar.
OK. I understood it now. I have to upgrade to Maverick first then. Why is that not part of the information from Apple?
I have not dared to upgrade to Maverick yet since I am quite dependent on Aperture to process my RAW-files.
But where is it written or documented that this will give me a free conversion from the boxed version?
Why can't Apple inform us about that? I will probably move to Mavericks in the near future. But I will probably wait till version 4 arrives and make my decision wether or not to continue with Aperture.
Me feeling is that people with boxed version got a reason to expect something from Apple . After all we bought an expensive boxed version 3 just before a more reasonable version 3 appeared on App Store.
My strategic move is: Upgrade to Maverick. If the free upgrade works; fine. But I will not do that until Aperture 4 is here. This time I want to see the price tag before I go for Aperture again.
I will not upgrade to Maverick and risk that I have to pay for a minor upgrade of Aperture since Mavericks requires Aperture 3.5 to work.
If the price tag for upgrade from boxed version of Aperture 3 to App Store version of Aperture 4 is the same wether you have the boxed version or not, then guess what kind of software I will go for then.
since Mavericks requires Aperture 3.5 to work.
It is the other way round - 3.5 requires Mavericks, but Mavericks does not require Aperture 3.5. Aperture 3.4.5 works well with Mavericks - the same as with Mt. Lion - only it cannot support the Mavericks specific iCloud features. For example, you cannot use shared Photo Streams both ways.
Why can't Apple inform us about that? I will probably move to Mavericks in the near future. But I will probably wait till version 4 arrives and make my decision wether or not to continue with Aperture.
Look at the Release Notes http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518 and the Tech Specs http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/ for requirements for AP 3.5:
Operating system:
Mac OS X v10.9 (or later)
---
But where is it written or documented that this will give me a free conversion from the boxed version?
It is what happened when I upgraded - I was surprised by it and have not seen it documented anywhere. But it is very convenient. Since the 3.5 upgrade Aperture is sitting right on he "Purchased" tab of the AppStore and can download it and reinstall it freely on all my Macs, when I sign into the AppStore with my AppleID:.
Seems then that it is safe to upgrade to Mavericks after all, still with the 3.4.5 of Aperture. Guess I will to that as a first step when I have the necessary back-ups of the system in place.
So then I will be ready to evaluate the next step, whether it will be 3.5 and version 4 after that.
Thanks for the answer that clarfied it for me.
