10.9 (Mavericks) External Display Problem

Recently I made the upgrade to OS X 10.9 and now I start to having problems with the resolution of my sceen. I have a LG Flatron E2250V and it work perfectly in OS X 10.8.3, the recomend resolution for this display is 1920x1084 but right now the system only give me 1600x1200 option, thereby is in a wrong frecuency for my screen.

About 3 month ago I try to upgrade the sistem to OS X 10.8.4 and I had the same problem.

Mavericks is not working with the multiple display option. It is very dissapointing, I would use different words than dissapointing, but then this post will be deleted. I have everything set up for an external dell monitor, but now I just have to work with my macbook pro. Apple really didnt't realize that before releasing the software? It was completely intentionally to release a not working software to customers, you knew what you are delivering, a software that doesn't work....AGAIN!

Same thing is happening to me. For many years I have been running my output to a Panasonic PT AE4000U comfortablly with a 1920x1080 resoution. Ever since I upgraded to OSX Mavericks I have not been able to output above 1280x1024. Which is really frustrating because I use Pro Presenter and all of my files, a rough 500 hundred of them, are set to a 1920x1080 resolutoin. So is most of my media... PLEASE fix this!!!

I'm using a MacBookPro (mid 2010) and a Dell IN2010N external display, with the original Apple Mini Displayport to VGA adapter. After upgrading to Mavericks, my external display keeps losing it's resolution settings. After wake-up from sleep, login window or screen saver, my display is no longer working in the maximum available resolution. Everytime this occurs, I need to go to System Preferences and reset the display to it's maximum resolution.

I'm sharing office space with co-workers and I have a lot of sensitive info on my screen during a working day. Every time I walk away from my desk, I need to lock my screen so this manual reset of resolution (after getting back to my desk) needs to be done very frequently. This is very annoying!

Tried the NVRAM-reset, fixed my disk (both Repair Disk and Repair Permissions from the Recovery menu) and changed my display setitngs to "Optimal settings for this display" but nothing seems to help. Any other suggestions?

@Solrac139

I have the same problem as you exactly on a mini MAC with a 10.9 upgrade, on a LG E2250V.

What G Webb suggested was correct. I tried it last night and it failed. But not this morning.

His instructions need a little clarification.

Go to "VGA Display".

Start with "Best for display".

Then press ALT before you choose "Scaled".

You should see the 1920x1080 option on 60 Hertz. I did.

Yes, and Vkook is right, IT IS NOT VERY INTUITIVE. Quite stupid actually.

Now I need to tweek the display, and move on.

Painful.

Best Regards

Happy to find this thread b/c misery loves company and it looks like G Webb (on page 1 of this thread) has found a temporary solution until an update fixes this bug: the ALT key for more resolution options in scaled.

Early 2009 Mac Mini. Compaq monitor connected via Apple VGA adapter.

Worked great in Snow Leopard.

Not so great in Mavericks - resets to 800x800 or something like that. Looks like a huge magnifying glass has passed over the screen. The only way I've been able to fix it is by unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in, or rebooting. Neither can be good for the system.

Will try G Webb's solution next time it hits. Thanks!

I have a Mac Pro with a Quato 242 ex monitor.

Since upgrading to Mavericks the default scale is 800 x 600 and the correct resolution 1920 x 1200 is not available.

I tried using the ALT key but this does NOT help. It's impossible to get the correct resolution with Mavericks.

I even tried tools to set the resolution manually. No way! OSX prevents the correct resolution under all cirumstances.

I wish I could go back to Mountain Lion, but I don't have the system backed up 😟

Similar problem, and my symptoms are most like @anothertime's: I have a Dell U2412M 1920x1200 hooked up to my Core i7 MacBook Pro; after upgrading to Mavericks, my best resolution is 720p. I tried using SwitchResX to force 1920x1200, which can be done, but the monitor still thinks a 720p signal is being sent, and so the result is some kind of weird resampled thing (black bars on the side because of the wrong aspect ratio, and fuzzy).

One twist: I'm running my signal through a Tripp Lite B116 DVI signal splitter (between the computer and monitor). If I remove the Tripp Lite signal splitter then I get full resolution on my monitor again. (Before the upgrade, of course, I got full resolution either way.) Maybe that means nothing, but it makes me wonder if there's some EDID backwards incompatibility going on here, which my monitor correctly handles but which my splitter can't handle.

I fixed my problem by changing the VGA cable used to connect to the monitor. A new color profile was created and now the resolution is correct and image is properly adjusted to fit the entire screen.

What does changing the VGA cable do inside OS X? Is this a way of forcing the OS to ditch the old settings and re-scan?

I'm on a late 2008 MBP 5,1 w/ Apple Mini-Display Port to VGA adapter.

I also have a Late 2008 MBP. I have a Dell 2711 hooked up with a StarFit? Mini Display Port -> Display Port cable. Until yesterday it was working at a resolution of 2560X1440 in Mavericks. Now with that cable I get nothing, the screen is blank, even after trying to reset the PRAM (a number of times).

I have a DVI connector but it give me a crappy resolution and it does not reset after the PRAM reset.

Thanks, for your suggestion, I tried Display Menu from the App Store and it does not offer a higher resolution than 1920X1080 (which I am running at now but I switched to a DVI cable).

The issue is the MiniDisplayPort - DisplayPort Cable only gives a black screen (yesterday it worked). You need that cable to get to the full resolution of 2560X1440.

Nov 8, 2013 9:50 AM in response to aringa9

To get the correct resolution you need a mini display port -> display port cable such as the link to the one below. With that you can get the 2560X1440 resolution.

Unfortunately when I upgraded to Mavericks it screwed up. My MBP (late 2008) running Mavericks does not recognize the cable and the screen is blank. At least I can use my monitor connected to the mini display port -> DVI cable.
