10.9 (Mavericks) External Display Problem

Recently I made the upgrade to OS X 10.9 and now I start to having problems with the resolution of my sceen. I have a LG Flatron E2250V and it work perfectly in OS X 10.8.3, the recomend resolution for this display is 1920x1084 but right now the system only give me 1600x1200 option, thereby is in a wrong frecuency for my screen.

About 3 month ago I try to upgrade the sistem to OS X 10.8.4 and I had the same problem.

Thank you G Webb! My second monitor, an HP w2207 h Widescreen Flat-Panel Monitor connected by HDMI and mini DVI connector went into constant flicker mode after a Mavericks reinstall on my MacBook Pro 17". By using the ALT trick it got me thinking to try and Gather Windows on my MBP screen first. I was then able to see the HP screen resolution settings window, select Scaled and changed it to 1080p.

Bam! I can now resume using my second monitor again. I've been a lifelong Apple user, Tech Support specialist, and former Apple Store FRS and I had never thought of trying the simple trick of Gather Windows and then changing the monitor resolution since it was all previously done automatically before.

I have the same Mavericks/Display problems with my HP A7217A VGA Monitor which actually displays a Resolution of 2K (2048x1536) at 100Hz. Now its only 4:3 and maximum resolution of 1600x1200 with 60Hz (quite discusting).

The App DISPLAY MENU from the App Store let me change to 1600x1000 with 75Hz which is ok for now. But i have to start the app and change the Settings everytime i turn my Macbook Pro on.

Please Apple solve this Display issue that we all can work properly again! Thank you very much!

Genius, thanks. Worked perfectly, and now when I select from 'Best for display' to 'Scaled', it only shows the sensible resolution options.

Some other thoughts :

1) If you can't even see all these options like 'Scaled', check you don't have 'Mirrored displays' ticked. Turn it off, and they will suddenly appear.

2) I had to hit fn+CMD+F2, as I have reversed the default fn key settings so my function keys (F1, F2, etc) work without the fn key.

Running a brand new Samsung 24" monitor and my old Samsung 17" I have to reset when waking from sleep. I've been running external; monitors from MBPs, iMacs and Powerbooks and this is the first time I have had an issue. Safari doesn't want to open tabs or new windows either. As for naming the new OS after a notoriously difficult and dangerous surf break, perhaps there is such a thing as tempting fate.

Now that Apple seem to have become a shiney bauble manufacturing company, is anyone with me in starting a computer manufacturing company where the computers 'just work' straight out of the box?

Not good enough for a company that charge more and more of a premium for less and less of a product.

Upgraded my 2010 MacBook Pro to Mavericks, and lost my second external USB2HDMI display.

This is a known Apple issue to displaylink: http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=354

I'm using two startech.com USB2HDMI adapters with the displaylink drivers to use LG E2350 monitors.

My main display is a 27" Nixeus with direct displayport cable which works mostly OK, except display arrangement gets scrambled every time I connect, and every time I connect/disconnect one of the displays. Often the menu bar is missing half the items.

Hi everyone,

I just add here another issue with Mavericks.

I use a Macbook Pro 15" early 2011. My second monitor is a LG M2794D, linked to my Macbook Pro via a HDMI cable and a thunderbolt/HDMI adapter from Mobility Lab.

My first issue was about LG screen resolution :

After trying several settings, I found the solution :

Reset the LG screen image (Menu / Image / image format) to « original signal »

Then I changed some colour settings (again, directly from the LG screen menu)

And Monitor Preferences (in Preferences System) was finally able to propose something correct.

So, if it can help, I didn't use any program to solve that, just reset the resolution of the screen asking him to just display to original signal (and not try to adapt the format)

My second issue, still relevant, about MacBook Pro strat-up when thunderbolt/HDMI adapter is plugged in :

I have to wait until my computer is fully booted before plugging the adapter, otherwise, if I start the computer while the adapter is plugged in, my LG screen is in mirror mode, the resolution of both screens is very crapy, but above all, the computer is unable to start and puts himself in a display loop (and displays a gray screen with the loading logo which is frozen and appears every time overlaid)

If anyone has any idea..

Of course, everything was fine before updating to Mavericks..

thank you

Had the same problem - the Alt key trick let me get the max resolution, but the aspect ratio looks off.

I am a long time windows user but I managed to resurrect a Macbook pro my daughter had managed to trash. I got to say, this is not the most intuituve thing in the world. Does anyone have any idea what the reasoning behind the whole ALT thing bringing up more resolutions is?

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro and had the same problem and found a fix:

After reseting the PRAM, I had found that the preference of graphics cards (System Preferences > Energy Saver) was set to the discrete 9400 or "better battery life mode". Switching back to the "higher performance" 9600 GT 512MB option has fixed the problem.

Not sure what caused the machine to switch to better battery life mode (I set it to high performance years ago), but this has fixed the problem. My MBP is now recognized (using Apple adapters) by VGA and DVI displays.
