Mavericks and memory (Ram)

Hi

Anyone else noticed how Mavericks uses memory ?

I have a new Macbook Air 2013 with 4GB of memory and after a short wile.

The system have used 3.99GB of the total 4GB 😟 Isn't that a big problem. Thats can't be right.

I would think that the computer would suffer greatly after a short time of use and the computer

needs to be restarted. If thats true. The new Mavericks ***** big time on Computers with less

memory. Or is there something i don't know.

Thanks

Mavericks uses memory smarter than previous OS's, not necessarily less memory. Look at the swap memory if that is high then you have a problem. Also, if the mac is still running fast then there isn't a problem.

I was having MAJOR problems with opening anything or even as simple as starting up my computer (took 30 minutes at least). After 6 hours of viewing forums, the activity monitor(memory was in the green but RAM was running at 3.99G out of 4G), and correcting everything that could be the potential culprit (caches, repair of Disk Utility, etc), the problem continued to persist. And to top it off, the length of time to open anything or start up my computer kept increasing exponentially. After help from my dad for several more hours, the cause was determined to be the "Login items" that caused all of the problems. Go to System Preferences->Users & Groups->Login Items and uncheck all of the applications so they will not automatically open up upon starting of the computer. This solved all of my problems.

But having RAM full is not a problem, it's supposed to be that way. As long as the MEMORY PRESSURE graph stays green, it is not a problem.

That said, having a lot of login items will delay opening new pas and startup time, so it's certainly wise to keep those at a minimum, but from what you said, I'm not sure you actually eliminated them. Unchecking the box won't do it, you have to highlight each one and click the "-" button. The check boxes are only to hide the app when it launches, not to stop them from launching. And some of them were put their by the system to make certain apps (such as iTunes) work properly, so be certain you leave those active.

Aug 11, 2014 10:27 PM in response to MadMacs0

So I thought I fixed the issue. Logging back on, I went through and "-" all of the items on the list. However, the issue still somewhat persists. I believe it's from an application I downloaded a week ago. I'm currently trying to get it off of the computer. I guess I'll have to deal with the iTunes problem when it comes along... Stay tuned.

Aug 11, 2014 10:35 PM in response to zactaylor

A quick recommendation then. Start a new discussion topic and explain your issue in detail. This discussion has gone on long enough and is a dead end since the only problem with Mavericks and RAM is possibly not having enough.

You haven't really told us much about your real problem and almost nobody is following this old thread any more. A new start will get you much more attention quicker from more qualified experts in that area than you'll find hanging around here. I have no idea why I am still around. That's just the way this forum works best.

I love mavericks, but let me share some painful experience. I had 2 MBP (Core Duo 2.53 w 8GB & i7 2.3 w 16 GB). Both upgraded to Mavericks and performed well (although in all honesty, the i7 was snappier). For a variety of reasons, both had to be downgraded to 4 GB and now perform like pigs. Both using newer software (M$ Office 2011) and not running utilities. By comparison, my iMac (Core Duo 2.16 w/ 4GB) is still pretty snappy stuck on Lion, used foe similar purposes and software (M$ Office 2008). My conclusion based on just observation, no measurement or fix application, don't even think about running Mavericks on less than 8 GB and I would think VERY hard before running it on less than 16. If your Mac can't accept enough RAM, stay with Lion or Mountain Lion until you get a new Mac with more RAM.

Mavericks requires no more Ram than Lion or Mountain Lion, 4GB works, 8GB works better, 16GB best of all (just like Mountain Lion)

If you Mac has less than 4GB and you are unable to increase it you should stay on Snow Leopard.

You sure have a lot to choose from. I am not at all surprised that your Mac doesn't run well.

Remove all of these (in the red boxes), there's lots more, there are in fact so many that it might be faster and certainly will be better if you erase your Mac and reinstall, restoring data from a backup

User uploaded file

It is going to take a while to get through the entire list, and you must remove each item correctly (per the developers instructions) google for them. If you are actually using a BlackBerry contact Rim for solutions for syncing it with Yosemite. Paragon NTFS is included because it is capable (as a system extension) of causing havoc, but it is not known for that. It may be OK to put it back later

OK.

I eliminated the launchdemons and launchagents that were not needed at all...from the System Folder, from the Root Folder and from the user folder...

Now it seems a bit better:

You have disabled GateKeeper, which is never a good idea! It's easy enough to use non-AppStore or unsigned apps by simply right-clicking / Command-clicking the app and choosing "Open" from the Contextual Menu. That way you won't accidentally install something dangerous or annoying.

Re-enable GateKeeper by opening System Preferences->Security & Privacy->General tab.

If the padlock is closed, click on it and enter your admin credentials.

Change “Allow apps downloaded from:” to at least “Mac App Store and identified developers”.

Even though this is disabled now, you have obviously accidentally installed adware.
