I Want The 2D Option Back For The Dock In Mavericks

Mavericks seems nice so far, but I had been using the terminal command (can't remember it's name) to show the dock, at the bottom of the screen, in 2D. Much as it looks in Mavericks when the dock is pinned to the right or left side. This worked in the last 3 major OSX releases, but not in Mavericks.

Can we please have that option back? I find the 3D dock cheesy-looking (bad mix of 2D/3D), and quite distracting. But I don't want to have to pin my dock to the right or left side to have it appear as it used to.

Hi,

Workaround was very simple , i had download a program called DockMod but the problem is that is not free and now has expired (after some hours)

What i did was to load a background image that i had created for the dock (simple shape like the 2D dock background) but the problem was that it will apply all the image in 3D style again and distort it.

So i set the image to 0% opacity and then only the icons would be visible (play a little bit with the other settings to remove shine, corners etc)

After i had another idea , why not to just draw the 2d shape in my desctop backround image, as i usually do not change my icons, so they will fit in place?

It took me sometime to make it fit with my current icons and in the end was ok and feel ok.

Thing is that this was full experiment specially now i see that dockmod is trial.

I think i will wait for something better or try dockmod in "free mode" and maybe not expire (there is an option)

I wish there was just an option like before with a terminal command..

DockMod is not yet compatable with Mavericks, that is why it is advertised as Beta only with certain features disabled. I would be waiting, if you wish to use third party hacks, until at least they make it compatable or who knows what it may do to your system.

According to their own FAQ Section under Is It Safe To Use, they say themselves

DockMod injects itself into the dock process and modifies the actual code in the program. Since the dock application is an integral part of your system, there is always the risk that unforeseen bugs in DockMod can cause the dock process to crash, therefore causing extreme system instability. DockMod has been through a rather rigorous beta-testing process, but there is always the chance that there are things that have been missed, or variables from different systems that have not been tested. Therefore, we HIGHLY recommend that you familiarize yourself with a few basic recovery routines:

  • Make a backup of your dock application (DockMod makes a backup, but you should make your own).
  • Learn keyboard shortcuts to navigate your computer and open applications (you can open almost any app from the spotlight search bar).
  • Do a practice run of restoring your dock without using the dock to navigate (harder than it sounds).

It should never be necessary to need to reinstall OS X. At most, you’ll need to recover your dock from a backup.

Cheers

Not for me but thanks. I am having no issues with the dock and would rather live with its appearance than introduce third party system modifying apps which invariably cause issues. But others will probably use it but to the detriment of their system. And all for a little eye candy? Personally I don't see the advantage over the negatives.

I understand your position completely; my reply should have been to those looking for a change, like spanakorizo. However, I do want to note that, for me, it isn't just about "eye candy". I make extensive use of the Dock and the blindingly bright 3D shelf with the even brighter indicator lights was causing serious eye strain.

Coming from a Linux background, I suppose I'm a little less wary of tinkering with the system. You are probably right, though: I maybe should have noted that my suggestions shouldn't be followed if people are uncomfortable with a little troublehooting/ command line work.
