Upgrading iMovie from v9.0.9 to v10 with projects and events on external HD

Seem to be running into an issue using iMovie v10 post-upgrade...

I run iMovie v9.0.9 with many projects and events on several external (multi-TB) hard drives. They would not fit on my primary HD due to sheer file size.

I was able to upgrade to v10, but when I tried to convert my existing iMovie library, my primary HD suddenly got a disk out of space error. It appears that the library conversion process is consolidating project and event files from the external drives onto the primary drive. Is this to be expected? Are external drives still supported with iMovie v10?

Not sure the best way to proceed, other than to continue using the old library and iMovie v9.0.9 (which thankfully still works) and try to descipher what files to delete from my now-full primary drive.

Unfortunately, my original plan of consolidating my library onto one giant external hard drive did not go smoothly.

Consolidation:

1. Moved key elements of old library to single external drive (iMovie Events/* except for the 'iMovie Drop Box' folder, and iMovie Projects/*)

2. Made sure the now-consolidated libary was stored on the top-level of the drive per this support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6012

Conversion:

1. Opened iMovie v10 --> File --> Update Projects and Events.

2. Conversion appeared to work; it created the "iMovie Library.imovielibrary" respository with a file size nearly as large as the original library

3. Conversion process then got hung up on the last event, prompting a message saying that some projects had video clips that could not be located. When I dismissed this message, the beach ball spun for hours "working" on the event but never completing

4. Had to force quit after several hours - I'm sure this'll end well

5. Reopened, discovered the titles of my events were listed in the left panel, but no video was present inside them. Also the projects were empty of any video.

At this point I'm getting a little disillusioned with the upgrade. I have a deadline to complete a video so I don't have time to muck around with the conversion to make it work. I may end up waiting for a point upgrade to see if the conversion process has improved and/or gotten smarter about how to proceed on libraries it deems incomplete. Grateful Apple provided us the route to keep going with 9.0.9, but looking back I wish there had been warnings about needing X amount of drive space before kicking of the library conversion.

I am facing the same issue, however I was able to import manually the raw film data the following way:

- (optional) Create new Library under File, Open Library, New... (you will get the option where you wish to store the Library

- Create manually an event, rename if you wish

- Right click on the event and select "import media"

- Find the orginal movie data on your various locations. My data was stored under Movies, Imovies Events and than each respective project. Select all files staring with "clip...". Imovie will start importing now which can take some time.

The only thing I have not figured out is how to import the old Imovie Projects.I have 3 that I started with and would like to finish... If anybody knows this, please let me know.

Good Luck!

iMovie 10.0.1 has been released to address reliability issues when updating projects and events from previous versions of iMovie. Specifically, iMovie could appear to stop responding or quit unexpectedly during the update process.

If you encountered these issues, you should now be able to update your projects and events successfully. To do this, visit the link below and follow the instructions listed in the section "If updating is interrupted or takes an extended period of time."

I am having this exact problem. The only catch is, I just did a fresh install and never installed iMovie 9. I also don't have a library with anything in it, and it's sitting on a drive with a terabyte of internal space. I've deleted it and let iMovie re-create it - same problem. It's in the default location, so permissions seem fine. It doesn't matter what I try to import, or what size it is, I just get the error that I don't have enough space. Also, I'm on 10.0.1 and OS X 10.9.1. Anyone have any other ideas? It's super frustraing, it's entirely unsuable.

to resolve do this go to

in the folders of imovie 9 (eventes of imovie, imovie projects, etc)

there is a file with the name "UpdatedToiMovie10", delete that file and go to

Imovie -> file-> upadte projets and events.

P.S- It take some time you have to wait, DON´T STOP THE IMOVIE.

Tactos, thanks for this tip! I deleted that file in both the events and projects folders and also double-clicked the file named "iMovie Library 1" to force iMovie to open it. After that I updated the projects and everything finally showed up. Where I expected it. Now I just need to rename that library file to something a little more helpful (like "Media Drive Library") so I know which one I'm really looking at. Will wait until all project background processing is done.

I too am completely lost. I updated to the new version and I now have "iMovie Library " and "iMovie Library 1".

Here is what I am trying to figure out:

1. Why are there now separate "iMovie libraries"?

2. How can I tell what hard drive these libraries have the files on them? It used to say where the files were stored on each individual hard drive.

3. I used to have my files sorted by year, and each file was organized within the year in alphabetical order. They are now listed in alphabetical order, but there is no more year heading. Many of my old videos are old converted analog videos that do not have the original date stamp on the video, and I have no idea what year the videos were originally filmed. The metadata on those events only shows when I originally imported them into iMovie, not when they were originally filmed. How do I sort my clips again by year?

4. I imported some new video into iMovie and I have no idea how to control which hard drive it imports to. Anyone know how to figure out which drive it imports to? I have multiple hard drives, and some are specifically dedicated to videos. It seems I no longer have control of that. I noticed my "Mac HD" drive is rapidly losing storage space, and it seems that some of my imports are going there instead of to my separate dedicated hard drive.

hi.

1. when did the update imovie does not erase the old library. The imovie creates a new library.

2. to know what the new library, I send an print is how the new library icons are different. The following is the image of the new imovie various libraries.

3. to organize by date, also sending a picture to show (my version is in Portuguese but it will get there too)

User uploaded file

4. in principle must go to the root folder of movies. but when importing new videos have to see to what library you are importing. Usually also some pictures to show.

Thanks Tactos. I am trying per your suggestions.

I have approx 150GB of movies to 'update' and even after imovie reports that Update Events and Projects has completed I see that iMovie continues to work in the background on this task - in fact warns me that tasks are currently in progress if I try to quit iMovie10. If I look at my hard disk I can see activity in that the disk space is being consumed at approx 10KB per second. Extrapolate that if you wish as an indicator but for now I'm leaving the machine powered on and will not touch it again until the background tasks complete.

This is gonna take a looong time.

I'll update with how it progresses

Can I resurrect this discussion? I hope so because I have a question and hopefully some helpful hints.

In your post you said the "Update" process converted you external files. If that is true then my question is answered. I have numerous external drives with tons of movies and DO NOT want to be required to copy them to my main drive for updating.

I have also been reading on how to move movies to an external drive in iMovie 10. Here's what I found works best:

To Move Movie to External Drive:

Create a new Library on the external drive (File>Open Library>New), name the library whatever you want. Now go to the base view where it shows "Media-Projects-Theater", right-click (control-click) on the movie, select "Move to Library", select the Library where you want the movie and files related to that movie to move to. And voile, it moves to your external.

BTW, be aware that iMovie v9 DOES NOT work with El Capitan!!
