OSX Mavericks keyboard volume buttons not working on MacBook. Help.

The Safe Mode fix worked for me but the problem keeps coming back, every day or so it pops up and I have to do the full restart again and again.... what's going on with this?

Try plugging in headphones, play part of a song try using the volume buttons, even if they don't work while the headphones are plugged in try unplugging the headphones and try the volume buttons again to see if they work.

The audio stopped working when I plugged in a soundcard for use with ableton live. my preferences for when not using Live was set to standard built in speakers. Maybe this is an issue as well?

I tried plugging in headphones and then unplugging them, and the problem disappeared. Don't know if that will fix it for everyone, but might be worth a try.

I restarted my laptop and that fixed problem perfectly for me!!!

Try restarting before trying the terminal sudo killall coreaudiod method. I hope that helps.

Ack! I just tried this and it killed the sound completely! Now I have no audio at all! Help!

I found the answer to this by the following post I found elsewhere:

Check to see if there is a glowing red light INSIDE your audio port. I had the red light, but was lucky enough to catch it before it shut off again. It means your digital audio out has switched on. Even if you don't see a red light, you can insert a plastic/wood toothpick in the hole and try and switch it off. The switch should be at the 3 o'clock position and go towards the 6 o'clock position. Some people also have had luck inserting their headphone jack and pulling out a few times, however the toothpick worked for me. Another recent report was that inserting the headphone jack and turning it in the hole helped.
